A big book stacked with a wealth of information..... but it proved not to be the book I hoped it would be.

I have other Martin Evening publications which have all been very good. This one was a bit of a disappointment for me. I will try and qualify that because other people may think it fabulous.

There is no doubt a tremendous amount of work and research has gone into preparing the book for publication.

I was (perhaps naively) expecting to read this cover to cover (over some time). To be able to pick it up and really learn / study / practice as I went. It's certainly not that kind of book and in fairness, it is probably not intended to be. Perhaps more useful as a reference book (pick it up when you need to know something, find it in the index and go straight to the page).

I think it has been edited and checked more from a technical perspective than a reader / user take on things. There were occasions that a particular tool was referred to in the text and it took time (and a google search) to find it (as it was not visible and nothing to show me what icon I was looking for. In fact there were several times I had to refer to a Google search to support and help take in what I was reading on the page. On a small number of occasions, this was because despite following instructions, I tried to perform the task I was reading about – and it did not work. I had to Google it to understand it so I could move on. For me, that means the instructions were sometimes not as good as they could have been (and that was frustrating). I have been using Photoshop daily for many years – so I am no novice (and I am using the latest CC version).

Whilst intended to be focused on Photoshop ‘for photographers’, as a professional photographer, much of the content is of no interest to me at all (clever though it is). I don't think my needs are particularly niche or unusual (event / editorial / wedding photography).

As I say, this book does contain a mass of information. I am sure it all technically correct and it’s clear the author has drawn on highly skilled third parties to contribute and check content. It's something I will keep on the shelf as a reference book, but as a Photoshop ‘work’ book for photographers (a cover to cover read – learning along the way). It did not meet my expectations and proved to be a disappointment. My requirements would be better met by a book half the size, half the content (it's a big book), lower in cost and more designed for the event / editorial / wedding work I undertake.

I thought long and hard before writing this review as I hate leaving less than 5* reviews. I believe I have been fair in my comments.

The must have book on Photoshop/Bridge and Camera Raw

The title say it all. It is the best book on Photoshop For Photographers. Not really anything bad to say about it.
