A Wonderfully Entertaining Series.

A wonderfully entertaining series for all James Herriot fans. It’s lovely to be able to watch them all again so many years after watching the series when it was aired on the BBC in the 1970’s. The only thing that puzzles me slightly is why there are so many DVD’s- why was it not possible to put more than two episodes on each disc? Never mind, this only slightly detracts from my enjoyment. A Deep Joy indeed !

Thoroughly refreshing to watch these , as We didn't have time to fully absorb first time round 40 yrs ago on TV !

...Such class acting with wonderful characters in beautiful settings & lovely storylines....humorous , some sad & thought provoking....also an excellent take on social history in gentler times , though not without its hardships.

The picture quality is much better than the TV versions. The whole box set got us through our 4 weeks of Flu & it was rather sad when We reached the last episode !....if only modern TV WAS AS GOOD AS THIS !!

Good family entertainment

All Creatures Great and Small was a British television series based on the books of a Yorkshire veterinary surgeon who wrote under the pseudonym of James Herriot.
The Herriot novels were written in an episodic style, with each chapter generally containing a short story within the ongoing narrative of Herriot's life. This format greatly facilitated their adaptation for a television series.
The series had two runs: the original (1978 to 1980, based directly on Herriot's books) was for three series; the second (1988 to 1990, filmed with original scripts) for four. A total of ninety episodes were broadcast. This super box set contains the entire series and it has been a great joy to visit them again. It will take me some time to work my way through all of them! It is the kind of programme that can genuinely be called family entertainment.

Simply brilliant entertainment

Beautiful setting and entertaining characters. They really get to grips with the animals. The stories are lovely, showing people being friendly and helpful. And they are quite fast, with quick changes between scenes. The dialogue is realistic and the characters behave with each other just as friends and colleagues would. Teasing and joking and also serious chats. Plenty of humour too in some of the scenarios.Read full review

Funny and endearing characters

totally brilliant series - I bought it for my parents to get them through the winter months - there are 89 episodes. they love it. Lots of laughs. Stories about country life in the 1930s, with really funny, eccentric characters and very good acting - There is also a love affair. Very endearing and likeable show.Read full review

Down to earth correct title no mistake in what it is showing

A very interesting story line and as I remember from the television series, All animal treatment as it would be. The vets are so entertaining in there chit chat.

Good family fun

While the staging a bit dated, the plots often a bit obvious and overacted, this is a very entertaining series, reflecting true Yorkshire rural life in characture. Delightful intro for children to see lambs and calves being born. Perhaps a good prompt to make a trip up to Thirsk yourself!Read full review

Still excellent

Surprisingly reasonable definition bearing in mind how old it is. Still an amazing series, perhaps not the stunning countryside photography of current Sunday night series. It's about time they remade this but maybe actors these days are more squeamish as to where they plunge their arms.Read full review

love it

I watched this in the seventies as a kid and always loved it, so great to have it on DVD, just a shame that it is not in 16.9, it looks a bit strange with black borders as it is the old square tv format, still great telly though.Read full review
