Having bought the echo dot and been impressed I bought this larger version. Better sound quality, more features and neat enough to be fairly unobtrusive in a room. I like having voice controlled access to my music collection /radio stations and the BBC iplayer. I'm still experimenting with Alexa's skills and have found the help to sleep feature useful. Also amused by the comments when I get home, leave or go to bed.
I think that this item would be very useful for forgetful people too, as it's easy to set reminders and alarms.
I'm a bit wary of having 'someone' in the house listening in!

Great gadget at a great price

The gen2 echo is a stylish looking quality speaker producing solid sound, with the same Alexa functions as any other newer model. The only feature missing from this generation is the smart home hub (aka Zigbee support) which became available in newer models. This is not a problem if you don't require smart controls or already own another hub.

Nowadays, used (or nearly new) gen2's can be found used at very low prices and present excellent value for money, especially as they're arguably better looking than the gen4 ball design.Read full review

Alexa- you're the best!

Wasn't sure if i would use this, but at £54 it seemed like a decent buy. I use it everyday now. I decided to subscribe to the Amazon unlimited music, and can now choose from 2 million tracks to play ( it's always found mine). i have also set up 2 palylists so far of my favourite tracks, so just ask Alexa to play setlist 1 or 2.
it is also good for all radio stations, so sit listening to the football on saturdays. We also ask it to play games, and have enjoyed pitting our wits at several, including Pointless.

Way ahead of Google

Bought 2 of these and the sound that comes out of these speakers is amazing. It not contols mt heating and lighting ,along with all my tech , so about 80% of my home is voice controlled . I am disabled and it was so easy to set up and to me . it saves me a lot of pain and discomfort in everyday life .
It is way ahead of Google ( I have that as well ) . Google is so problematic and unreliable , even spending 45mins speaking to a google tech . it would not set up , ( i eventually got it set up an hour and a half later . with no help). I with stay with Alexa ( Amazon) as it is so easy to set up and get everything running . If you want to struggle with a poor substitute , buy a Google . I prefer an easy life . Read full review

It's great for playing my music ,radio answering all your questions and even playing quiz games. Alexa can be a bit 'deaf' when you have a cold and your voice is a little stuffy.
