I bought it to transfer photos from my mobile phone on to TV screen.
It works really well. Once it is set up it's easy to use.
I had to get help from a "techie" friend to help me set it up in the first place.
It only works with new TV screens that have a HDMI socket.

Honest opinion

I bought this mainly because I wanted to mirror my iPhone or iPad on my 50" TV at home & for that purpose only. This works brilliantly :)
I did have a look at some of the TV app's, but all but a few were not free & you need to subscribe to & pay for, which was a little off putting. However, I did manage to find a few Channels on there that were free to use like Sky news, Redbull & a few others. All of the movie apps you had to pay to view if you wanted to watch a film.
I bought my Apple 3 TV box 2nd hand (refurbished) & the money I paid for it, I cannot really grumble. I did not get the Apple 4th gen box, as I read a lot of people saying it was not all that good, the only difference being you could add app's, but what's the point when I can simply mirror my iPad on my TV? A great addition to home viewing so easy to to use,good picture quality and sound. With a house with multiple tv's the atv is very simple to transport to any room so no arguments who gets to watch which programme,everybody happy. Worth every penny/pound.

When connected to the TV and a wired or fast wireless home network it can mirror the screen of your iPhone, iPad or MacBook on the TV screen. This allows you to show photos or video from your Apple device on the TV screen. Good points: It works with most modern TV sets. It works well, is very easy to set up and use. It will also play certain streamed content. Most, but not all, TV catch up service apps allow you to go into full screen mode. It can also play music via the TV or home cinema amplifier.

Less good points: It is not designed to work with non-Apple phones, tablets or laptops.

Easy to use

I brought this to replace a broken one. I brought the Gen 5 with the fancy remote. The scroll pad on that is useless, but I navigate on that using my old remote. Brand new not always the best

Hi, received this yesterday and after resetting the device in itunes I was able to use the airplay function on my iphone and ipad. It works great and it was easy to setup!

Smart looking, sleek design, easy set up.

Great device overall. Bit dissaapointed that it does not have BBC i player and other english tv platform hubs apart from now tv and sky news. But it does now include the wwe network. Good buy over all. Hope more features will be added in the near future. Apple TV (3rd Gen). Just Brilliant!!

Bought to stream video & audio to tv, had previously tried two different AV leads without any luck (would only work with audio) I have read that IPad will now not support video out by this method.
Unit was easy to set up using HDMI to tv & automatically connected itself to my internet,I have also connected my sound bar via the optical connection so I don't even have to have the tv on now to listen to my music collection.
Have not tried all the catch up services yet but no problem with BBC & ITV so far, but does not support certain video types which is a pity although this was mentioned in the description, mirroring feature & some video do not fill the entire TV screen but I am still working on this.
All in all I am more than happy with my purchase as it has opened a whole new dimension to the way I use my Ipad & would definitely recommend .Read full review...
