The Apple iPhone 4 is the thinnest smartphone in the world with the highest resolution display ever built into a phone handset. Read our full Apple iPhone 4 review to find out if it should be your next mobile phone. Updated July 29 2010.

The Apple iPhone 4, as the name suggests, is the fourth generation of Apple’s game-changing smartphone. It’s already garnered far more publicity than the previous three models – if not entirely for the right reasons.

Few could have escaped mass-media news coverage of reception issues highlighted by Apple’s unusual choice of design, which sees the iPhone 4’s aerials fixed around the outside of the handset. But before we examine the minutiae of antennae, let’s look at the technology changes found in the iPhone 4, and how it compares to its own predecessors.

Apple makes a big play about the slimmed down casework. If you lay an iPhone 3G down next to the 4, you can plainly see the latter is thinner, matching the 25%-thinner boast. Yet in the hand, the iPhone 4 actually feels chunkier.

That’s entirely due to differences in the way the case is shaped between models – iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS had a curvy form with rounded back and soft-radiused edges. But the iPhone 4 is a dense slab with square edges, seemingly heavier, although at 137g it’s only 4g more than an iPhone 3G, and 2g heavier than the iPhone 3GS.

Net result – it feels thicker in the hand. But it’s beautifully weighted and feels solid, against the 3G’s thinner-feeling form with its plastic back.

Front and back are now formed from toughened glass, and while we’ve not managed to scratch either side yet, we prefer to carry the 4 in a case that covers the back – the face that comes into most contact with the real world when lying down.

Retina
A simple comparison of screens between this phone and the 3G/3GS shows that there is in fact no comparison – the Apple iPhone 4’s display is richer, more colourful and much, much sharper. With four times the pixel resolution, that’s hardly surprising. You can now read – subject to eyestrain – every word on a webpage built for desktop PC dimensions, even fully zoomed out.

We noticed that small text on a webpage looked less bold, like a ‘light’ version of the font had been substituted. But compring back to an iPhone 3G screen showed that the older screens used plenty of anti-aliasing to reduce jagginess but make the type fuzzier. The iPhone 4’s typography is so clean, it looks almost lightweight.

All the extra graphics processing of four times the pixels has not slowed down the rendering of images one bit. In comparison to our 3G especially, the iPhone simply flies in its interface responsiveness. Pinch to zoom actions carry no lag, leaving pages and photos to scale up and down as quick as your fingers can dance over the silky screen.

Camera Time
Other headline features added to the iPhone 4 include two new cameras – facing fore and aft – which enable internet video calling and high-definition video shooting respectively. At present the only way we’ve found to use the video webchats is with Apple’s own implementation of video-over-IP, FaceTime. This works very well when it works – which is to say almost every time we tried.

Great "toy" - poor phone/GPS performance - Frustrating phone to use!

Simple basic review.

I compare this iPhone 4 to my previous Nokia 5800 xpressmusic

Battery life:
Pityful - If you use the wi-fi and bluetooth often and surf regularly, then you won't get a day out of it, in fact work on loosing 10% per hour battery life surfing especially via wi-fi. It will need frequent top-up charging. It's a constant consideration - so much so I have bought a portable re-charge pack.

Ease of use:
Yes, smooth simple operation. Some lovely user touches that make life easy and give a wow factor.
Drawback - phone management is via Itunes computer program. Ever used that? - It's total crap, unstable, uses vast computer resources and it doesn't even let you read/send text messages from the computer - pathetic.
You really need a gel case or similar, for although the device is truly gorgeous to look at and feels wonderful, it IS very slippy and easy to drop!!!

Features:
Good and bad here.
The dispay is without doubt, stunning.
I now understand why there are so many applications you can download and use on the iPhone. I feel part of the speed of operation of this device may be due to the operating system not have a lot to do. You need to have thousands of applications available, because many systems that are built into most other phones ARE NOT ON THE IPHONE. Simple things such as for example - send group text messages (one message to a group of many recipients) - you cannot do this on the iPhone without entering each recipients number individually, you have to download an application to do it, and all of a sudden that makes a simple operation very very clumbsy, and don't forget, many of the most useful applications are not free, you have to pay for them!

The GPS system in the phone - very good - provided you are out in the open. Inside a car (say to make a navigation application work) the GPS performance is pityfully poor resulting in patchy (at best) useibility.

Radio Frequency performance (that which makes it work as a phone) is truly awful. If you use your phone in a strong signal area, you will be pleased with it; if you are in a marginal signal area you will want to throw the phone away. It takes a good 30 seconds to shift from 3G to GSM networks when it looses the 3G signal, causing loss of the phone call and the other way round.
This is a BIG draw back to this phone and one that may well make me flog this again for I do live in a marginal area and it is becoming an issue.

So very very good touches to this phone and also some apaulling faults to it was well. Overall, balanced 50/50 I think. I don't think I would miss it a great deal.

Super, easy, reliable, wouldn't be without it, my iPhone!!!

Ths is the first smart phone I have had. I was quite surprised how quickly I got used to the different apps. I am sure there are many different attributes to this phone, that I do not know about, but will eventually find out.

I brought an iPhone as many of my family have one and are very happy with it. I can not compare this to another smart phone as I have never had one before.

I believe it is fairly easy to use, as you soon pick up how to use the apps.

I find you can open an app very quickly, so the camera, emails, phone book, etc are at the touch of an app.

The camera takes great photos and it is easy to swap to the video.

All in all I am very happy with the phone.

Superb and affordable technology in a stylish body that works brilliantly.

World beating mobile computer with camera, until today ( iPhone 4s announced )
Amazingly with all the facilities the iPhone 4 offers, it's operation is simpliciy itself. From the moment this phone is in your hand you will appreciate the quality, size and how comfy it feels. Connect to your computer, follow the on screen instructions and a few minutes later it's yours, it's personal, it's great, it's so good. Watch films, read books, listen to music, access emails, surf the web, take notes, take photos, take videos, record memos, play games-all simply done.
With the apps I've downloaded, I know what the weather will be tomorrow in my area, I can read or watch the latest news, I can use as a satnav. The list goes on.
I have progressed from iPhone 3, 3GS to iPhone 4. Apple are so on the ball with continuous hardware updates to the 4 and with an app store that runs into thousands, it's the phone of the future today.
Buy the way, you can make phone calls as well.

Indestructible and reliable-a great servant

This is, so I'm told, the last iPhone that was designed to be tough and durable and it so is. I must have dropped mine a hundred times (clumsy I know) on every type of surface including concrete with only a £1 gel cover not even a screen protector on it and it's not even got any noticeable scratches.
I couldn't kill it if I tried and I write this review in memory of a trusty servant I had for 3 years bought for £35 on eBay and never ever let me down. I have a Han Oneplus 3T now which is amazing but I wouldn't care to drop it!
Sorry to see you go..... (sniff)....

EXCELLENT IPHONE, EXCELLENT PACKAGEING AND EXCELLENT PHONE!

I bought this iphone because it is probably the most used phone in the entire world right now , execept maybe from the galaxies by samsung. The item is recieved was in excellent quality and in perfect condition, it is easy work if you are good with iphones or phones in general. Iphone's 4 are very good. The battery life is never really excellent on phones that love and survive on the internet but i guess the battery was 4/5 in my rateing. the packageing was very good too. HIGHLY recommenededRead full review...

Good quality, easy to use phone which does everything I need it to.

I bought the iPhone 4 to upgrade from my iPhone 3. Have a rolling sim deal with Tesco so was looking for the phone locked to the network.

The phone is great. Very easy to update all your personal information onto and very easy to use. Very similar to the iPhone 3 with a few add ons. I also, like the feel of the phone as it seems more weighty than the 3.Read full review...

iPhone 4

The phone is a compact size and like all iPhones, is easy to use. I would suggest not getting a locked one unless you're with or will be with, the network it is locked to as it is very expensive to get a smart phone unlocked.Read full review...

all in all an excellent phone, well worth the expense

this phone is an easy to use handset with some great features that are easy to navigate. The handset is robust if not a little heavy but thats a good thing as you always know its in your pocket, a negative point is the antenna being around the edge but with the range of different cases available is not an issue, the retina display is amazing with pin sharp detailRead full review...

if you want quality and hours of work /rest/and play ,its got 2b an iphone

hi on purchase of the iphone was to me to have ultimate must have in top phones, but sceptical has most people would be in paying so much for a phone, so on receiving apple iphone 4,and fiddling about with it for sometime ,it was to me' very impresive, and responsive, that stood from previous phones I've posessed .but negatives was prehaps the battery life needing recharging more regularly, but on staying that' its not the type of phone you put down for long, before you are back on flicking though things that this iphone has to offer, so basically it stands to reason why the battery life is in need of more juice,Read full review...
