Really good MM Cartriddge - Beyond Expectations!

I bought this AT-VM740ML after a lot on on-line research. I didn't want moving coil since more expensive and cannot replace the stylus even though my phono amp allows for it. I set this up in an SME 309 fitted to a Technics SL1210. I learnt that a good deck and expensive modern tonearm is even more important than the cartridge. Fitting is easy enough since this SME has a detachable head and easy instructions. AT cartridge is nicely packaged and looks good once installed. Sound is really good with no tracking problems at all even at end of side. A very secure sound without any added emphasis which is what I like. Made a good job of playing even some charity shop vinyl both rock and classical at 2g tracking force. Lots of options with these AT cartridges so I chose this model as one down from the top model. Its got a fine line stylus and it shows in very clean treble and transients. Punch and controlled in the bass. Very good purchase and suits my set-up. Read full review...

An Audio Technica Marvel

I bought the AT VN740ML to use in an SME3009 S2 Improved arm on my second turntable, an Original Systemdek.
I was keen to try one of their Micro Line stylus profiles as they have a reputation for great tracking and smooth delivery due to how the stylus sits in the groove.

I wasn’t disappointed, the cartridge delivered way and above my expectations. The musicality, very detailed but smooth top end and dynamics, were fantastic.
The thing that struck me more than anything though was the soundstage and the stereo separation, the best I’d heard from a moving magnet cartridge.

There are slight niggles though, the biggest one being that Audio Technica have still not introduced threaded connections to most of their high end cartridges which can make them a pain and fiddly to bolt into the headshell.

The second thing is more an observation, you really need to be prepared to put some effort into setting the VTA, azimuth and tracking force spot on to hear this cartridge at its best, but that’s a minor point that could be applied to most cartridges and certainly to higher end Audio Technicas.

The end result however is more than worth the effort. When I compared the VM740ML to my Audio Technica Art9 moving coil (at 4 times the price) in my other turntable, an LP12, I found myself being struck more by the similarities in the 2 cartridges, than how much better the Art9 was.
This was much more than just the Audio Technica ‘house sound’, it showed that the VM740ML was almost moving coil like in its delivery. With all the benefits of replaceable and even an upgradable stylus (to the VM760SLC) this is indeed a smart buy that gives many other more expensive MMs a run for their money.
