Astonishing!
Absolutely astonishing film. If you are thinking of buying this film - don't hesitate. You will be gripped from the first few minutes until the very last seconds. I am 72 years old, and some of the facts which emerge from this film were obviously suppressed by American and British goverments. It is the story of a girl who, in company with friends, went to a shooting range, rather than to see a movie, as the toss of a coins showed heads rather than tails. In that instance her life changed forever, as she became completely immersed in the violence of the German invasion of Russia. Don't miss this. Once you have seen it you will not forget it.Read full review

Hard work to follow time jumps
The definitive thing about this film is the subtitles are very quick its about a Russian girl very small becoming a sniper and how she is thought of as a soldier and nothing else, her role is very is to kill and not be killed and when she gets going her Government treats her like an unfeeling puppet.
Not the best War film I have seen by a long way.Read full review

Not as expected ......
Yes, I had assumed it would be a documentary format. Instead it is the engaging story of a university, young girl living in the Ukraine before the German invasion of Russia. And her friends and colleagues. And how they become caught up in the gigantic struggle to resist that invasion. Their enlistments, the main character as a sniper. The story is enthralling and compulsive. It portrays the highs and tragic loss. It loses none of its realism as so welcome in Russian films. The computer graphics, where necessary to the story, are first class. The fact that is in Russian with subtitles loses none of the appeal or understanding.
A thoroughly enjoyable film on many levels.Read full review

Battle for Sevastopol cf Dunkirk
I found it a most interesting comparison with the film Dunkirk. We in the West know little of the campaign for the seige of Sevastopol. Some reviews mention the rather wooden character of the female sniper, but given the fact that her father was an NKVD officer it is unlikely she would have had an exuberant personality. The fact that it was being filmed at the same time as the take over of the Crimea by Russia also adds a subtext to the film. The storyline was stronger than the film Dunkirk in my opinion.Read full review
