Great game, just short of reaching its potential.

First off, I love the Battletoads franchise. I was about 4 when I played the original Battletoads; it was hard then and it's just as hard now. The one thing that really killed the game was how varied it was! The beat 'em up portions of the game were a blast while some of the side scrolling levels (ice caverns, this one's for you!) were just simply frustrating instead of fun. Overall, the original is a classic by all standards. It had great graphics, huge difficulty, awesome gameplay, two player capability, and innovative gameplay mechanics for the time. But it could have been better.

Two years later: Enter Battletoads/Double Dragon for the SNES. This game made huge strides in the graphics department and added some interesting twists to the gameplay. The first two levels serve as orderves until the third level comes and kicks your butt. The difficulty doesn't ramp up very steadily here. It's pretty easy at first but all of a sudden it seems to spike like crazy.

The cool thing about this game is that it focused more on the beat 'em up side of things. While not completely focused on fighting, the game did give you more levels to tear stuff up. It also added an option to play with two players and NOT be able to accidentally punch eachother, which was a godsend to those frustrated with how hard the original Battletoads became when playing with two people!

But realistically, this game does not live up to the standards of the original Battletoads. Admittedly, it was and still is cool that Rare got the rights to Double Dragon characters. Although they don't really fit into the game, who's to say that these two guys can't fight big rats and girls with whips? I mean there's as much reason for them to be fighting these characters as there is reason for there to be three mutant toads with the names Zitz, Rash, and Pimple.

The real kicker is that the game is just really cheap in the way it kills you. The original was very stingy with what it allowed. For example, on the speeder bike level, if you move at all while in the air you WILL die when you go to land. However, if you abide by the strict rules of life and death in the game, you will survive. In Battletoads/Double Dragon, the rules aren't quite as clear. This may be because collision detection is not as good as it was in the first game, or because the difficulty doesn't allow much time to react to things. If you wish to succeed here, dedication and thus memorization of the levels and strategies is key. Otherwise you'll kick the proverbial bucket in no time.

Graphics: 7/10
Good for an SNES game, but considering this game came out in 1993, or only 1 year before the other RARE classic Donkey Kong Country, it pales in comparison. For those who've never played that game, check it out right away. It's one of the best experiences on SNES hands down as well as the most beautiful game to grace the system other than its two sequels and Mario RPG.

Gameplay: 8/10
Solid Battletoads fare, but the gameplay doesn't seem as tight as it did on the original NES game. Grabbing biker girls by their hair and throwing them around never gets old. If you don't know what playing a Battletoads game is like, pick this one up and play it with a friend. You'll be sure to enjoy it at least for a little while. Even though the difficulty is severe, it never seems to get old.

Sound: 8/10
Pretty sweet rock soundtrack goin' on here. Sound is good for an SNES game. Lots of punching and hitting and exploding sounds.

Back to the my childhood

Super happy with the game received, thank you! This was a game that I played with my childhood best friend. As soon as the game graphics appeared on the screen, I was instantly transported to the past. The only thing that was a downer was realizing that we beat those levels together. It seems much harder to get through as an adult, and solo player. We were video game warriors then. Very happy with my purchase...and micro time machine. Thank you!Read full review...

Battletoads and double dragon

This is a great game for the snes. You can play as a battletoad or as one of the dragons. The cartridge was in rough state, but luckily I had a replacement label. And with a little bit of cleaning, the game looks and works good as new.Read full review...

for battletoads fans

If you are a battletoads fan, it's a must buy to complete your collection. Great two player beat em up. As are the other battltoads games, its hard. I gave four stars for the fact that the sprites are small for an snes version. overall graphics are good and is a fun and challenging gameRead full review...

A very fun game for Super Nintendo

Battletoads/Double Dragon is a very fun game. It combined two very good games in Battletoads and the Double Dragons. You can pick ether a Dragon (Billy) or (Jimmy), or a toad (pimple), (Rash), and (Zitz). This was the first time you could play as Zitz. A notable thing about this game is that it is VERY HARD! To beat it you will have to be very good at beat um’ up games or have a friend to play with you. There is not a tone of levels but the levels that are there are long and have a big mean boss at the end. If you like a good challenge or this genre of game you should probably pick this one up.Read full review...

I love this game as a kid and still love this game I wish we never went past Nintendo 64 so I could appreciate these graphics for what they were back in the day it gets boring after a while but that’s with all these games from overexposure to these super ultrafied reality like games but still this is such a good game
