Very fine production and playing, but too serious?
Angela Hewitt is a marvellous pianist, her Fazioli is a beautiful instrument, and the recorded sound is superb. So why do I have reservations? I am sure that she has carefully considered every note that she plays and the expression, but, at least for me, I am looking for more playfulness and variety in these works. It's all a bit serious. Alternatives? There are several good sets out there, but I would mention Klara Würtz on a modern instrument (her complete set can be found quite cheaply) or Robert Levin on Mozart's own fortepiano, full of joy and invention, even if a more expensive proposition. Other listeners may react differently.
Hewitt's notes are interesting and informative, and Hyperion's production values are up to their usual high standard.
In any case, these works are worth getting to know. Not necessarily Mozart's greatest, but still pretty amazing.Read full review
