Just as good as Breaking Bad

A great watch with great characters and plots. Only disappointment is, I didn't realise that there would be at least 4 seasons, with season 4 not even shot as yet!!

Lightweight, middle-aged office drama. A comparatively weak and tame prequel to the monumental Breaking Bad

Better Call Saul, a prequel to the monumental Breaking Bad, is the story of Jimmy McGill, who qualifies as a lawyer in his late 30s, after a long spell in the Mail Room of older brother Chuck's big law firm in Albuquerque. The highly ethical Chuck and senior partner, Howard, mistrust Jimmy's past as a Chicago bar room fly & grifter, and won't employ him as an associate, though they do take on Jimmy's friend, Kim, who also worked her way up from the Mail Room. Jimmy, who we recognise as the future Saul Goodman, sets up an independent practice, and uses his people skills and Kim's insider help to find new clients. The key elements entertaining the viewer in this main strand of the story are Jimmy's ability to spin a yarn and take down a mark, Kim's ambition, hard work, and her loyalty to Jimmy, Chuck's wierdness, Howard's pomposity, and several office politics scenarios. However, this is all very lightweight stuff, in comparison to the mighty themes and performances of Breaking Bad.

In a secondary strand, more closely connected with Breaking Bad, we learn about ex-cop Mike's past in Philadelphia, and we're let into his relationship with his daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Mike has dealings with the doomed Mexican cartel characters from Breaking Bad: Krazy 8, Tuco Salamanca, and Tuco's uncle, Hector, who is still walking & talking here. Jonathan Banks, as Mike, is the strongest actor in the series. However, on his own, he can't compensate for the loss of the superb Cranston, Paul, and Esposito.

Overall, this is a fairly average drama, trading on it's distinguished connection to former glories. The market in Better Call Saul DVDs is unjustifiably inflated, though this box set was cheaper than most.

A 'Must' for Fans of BREAKING BAD!

Diving into this rare little gem is a real tonic to ease the withdrawal symptoms caused by finally coming to the end of all the truly addictive seasons of that outstanding cult black comedy, 'Breaking Bad'.

Walt and Jesse's deliciously sleazy lawyer, Saul Goodman, was such an integral part of the fabulously off-the-wall dark humour in BB that this spin-off comedy was specially written with him as the main protagonist. It acts as a prequel, setting out Saul's chequered life, leading up to his cameo role in BB, and there are delightful appearances of some of BB's other shady characters to watch out for.

Highly recommended!
