Get it, you will not be dissapointed!

Great filter. Performs well filtering standard tap water. Doesn't necessarily soften hard water but it will clean it very well. You still need the essential minerals within. Perfect size for up to 3 people that consume a lot of water in coffee and cold teas produced daily. Only drawback is filling chamber everyday but you will get used to it. It is also peace of mind that in case of an emergency, this unit is on hand to purify some river water if need be! I'm very happy with my purchase.

(Tip) Get the stainless spigot, it's nice and is of much better quality than the cheap standard plastic one supplied with unit.Read full review

I read my it's water report, ick

I can't sleep sometimes, so i place boring reading by my bed. My city's water quality report scared the heck out of me and made me reconsider my Britta, which got a D+ at best. I researched water filters taken into emergency situations to make drinkable water. I figured these would be most trouble free. I eliminated the ones that didn't remove floride. I chose the big Berkey with the extra fluride and arsenic filters. I fill it up in the morning and drain the filtered water in it into a pitcher for coffee, tea, cooking. It works well, We go through the entire 3gallons every day. Our pets also drink filtered water. As it can filter up to three gallons an hour, it meets our needs.Read full review

Great tasting water

I have looked at hundreds of filtration systems and I chose the big berkey. I use my berkey system for drinking water and for cooking. It not only tastes wonderful as drinking water but the food has a much better taste to it when I steam or blanch my veggies. My dad thought I learned a new way of cooking but it was as simple as using quality water. It sits on my counter (doesn't take up a lot of room) so it's there when I need it. Stainless Steel vs. light Berkey

This is our second Berkey..we bought the light berkey but after several years the plastic top that is very hard to snap off got a crack in it. Instead of buying another light berkey replacement...we chose to go with the stainless steel..Much easier to take off and clean the filters...no snapping just lifting out. I would suggest you go with the stainless steel as it will last much longer and so much easier to clean.Read full review

Love it! The 2 1/2 gallon unit I bought came with a stand and the set up is very attractive. I tried the food coloring test - one tablespoon in the top reservoir - and the filters totally removed all the food coloring.
