Staying Found with a quality product The Brunton 7DNL Compass
In the modern age many have become dependent on Electronics, GPS in particular without really understanding the frailities of not having a backup system or to use the compass and GPS in Unison. Sadly our evolution to technilogy has made this so. The Brunton Compass 7DNL is a good backup to have as well as a primary source for navigation instead of the GPS. When used with a map or independently its a means of staying found in the wilderness or for that matter in the larger city or state parks.
For the money its affordable and economical. The reality is as well this simple device can in fact be difference between being lost and staying found. I often teach classes in cross country navigation and basic map and compass courses, I certainly would recommend this compass or for that matter any of the fine Brunton Navigational Aids.Read full review

Very nice, lightweight compass
I bought this compass to carry as a backup on my backpacking trips. It weighs less than an ounce and is perfect for my purposes. Though inexpensive, this is all the compass you need for nearly any backcountry travel. The dial moves smoothly but with enough friction to stay where you put it. Also, the compass is easy to read.
A couple of the corners are sharp as is typical for a compass of this style. It's very easy to smooth those corners to ensure that the compass does not poke through a pocket or ditty bag. I use an emery board or file for that.
The package includes a very lightweight page of instructions that you can easily pack along for reference.
This compass is an excellent value and I recommend it.

Navigation
I use my GPS to get bearing and distance to my destination in the woods hunting then use my compass to navigate with.
I take this compass, grind the sharp corners off, drill small hole for parachute cord. Insert, tie knot and on the other end of cord make a loop that lets me attach to belt loop in my pants and put compass in front pocket for convenience. The Brunton 7dnl is perfect size, easy to set heading and needle settles down quickly. I give it a 5 star.Read full review

Basic but capable
I bought this compass as a back up for my more full featured ones. Great quality by Brunton. Very capable compass, compact, store-able. Good for teaching kids. For the price range you would be hard pressed to find a better one.Read full review

Great entry level compass
This is a great entry level compass at a reasonable price. It has many of the features of the more expensive models. It does not have problems like the cheap knockoff compasses have.

One out of 4 is bad
I ordered 2 a few months ago;. I put one in my backpack as a spare. So I lost the one and got the spare out and found that it didn't work well. The needle would stick. I couldn't count on it. So I ordered two more. I have them and both work well. Good product at a good price.Read full review

Bubbles are Great
The description talks about bubbles that may appear. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM. I have used liquid filled compasses for many years. In cold weather an air bubble may appear. I know the compass is level when the air bubble in the center of the compass. I get better accuracy with a bubble leveled compass. This is a great value for a quality compass. I always thought the bubble was supposed to be there to level the compass. Read full review

Nice basic compass
Bought this baseplate compass to replace a very old Silva 123 compass in which the needle somehow managed to work it's way off the pivot. The Brunton 7DNL actually looks to be better engineered and the declination scale ring is easy to read and stays put. This compass is primarily for addition to an hiking essentials kit so lightweight and easy to use were the main criteria for it's choice.Read full review

Great little compass
This compass has everything you really need, but you had better get a book on using a compass if you are ever going to need to use one.
