How Next-Gen Gaming Should Be!!!

Pros
+ Captures the essence of H.P. Lovecraft.
+ Great graphics.
+ You have to actually aim guns & no HUD on your screen(feels like looking through your own eyes).
+ Awesome chase scenes & sound effects that will test your sanity.

Cons
- Aiming isn't always easy.
- Puzzles can be too difficult.
- You die too easily at times.
- No weapons until about 3 hours into the game.

Comments
This game is intense. Running in fear for your life to escape a twisted town has never been so fun except for 'Resident Evil 4' of course. This game has a very next-gen feel to it. It's almost like you are playing through a horror movie. The cut scenes are quite creepy as well.

Verdict
Must have for horror fans. Must play for anyone who is tired of the same old FPS. 4.5/5

Not a Twitch game, more of a thinking mans game

Sneaking around towns, looking into basements and seeing things dragged of into dark corners. I'd love to explain some of the great parts of the game but in doing so I would spoil the suspense
>I truely enjoyed Call of Cthulhu, there wasnt much action in the general sense of shooting things and running around, but the suspense/horror factor was great! If you like twisted horror films or a stephen king novel, then you'll probibly love this game.

Graphics are average, sound is awsome with a 5.1 dolby system.

This games selling point is about the story line, and the puzzles you have to solve to advance it. Honestly if your looking for a halo, or a Resident Evil type game Call of Cthulhu is not for you. If your looking for a game reminisent of the old "Alone in the Dark" games then by all means scoop this gem up as fast as you can.Read full review...

frayed ends of sanity

being an avid howard philips lovecraft fan, this game appealed to me immediately.
lovecraftian concepts DEFINE the dark depths of the human mind. his influence has spanned decades, reaching mediums such as music (see doom metal bands thergothon, nyarlathotep & foetor), movies (dagon, call of cthulu, and in the mouth of madness), literature (lots of lovecraft worship out there) and now, finally, a video game!

the first person mode puts you right into the game. i normally don't like 1st person that much, with the exception of doom & halo, but it's the feeling of terror it instills in you, running from enemies, hiding, jumping, creeping. you really feel like you're in the game. the fact that you can lose your sanity adds to the intensity. your vision becomes clouded, your movement mired in fear. if you look down from great heights, or at a mangled corpse, you'll begin to go mad.

the controls take a while to get used to, especially the climbing. i died many times before i figured out you have to look DIRECTLY upwards to climb a ladder. this game relies on lots of split-second timing and reflexes. luckily, you get some time to get used to them before the real nightmare begins. learning to utilize your surroundings is ESSENTIAL for survival. stealth is the key word in this game, as your enemies are as relentless as they are ruthless.

the graphics in this game are gorgeous, bringing to life every beautiful and disgusting detail. you must pay attention to every one of them, as the puzzles in this game can be extremely vexing at times. scrapes on the floor can indicate something has been moved, dripped paint alluding to false save points, and discolored floors rotten wood (steer clear, DUH). you can explore the town (quite large, with beautifully crafted character models, businesses, apartments and hotel.) the little things are quite stunning too, such as insects flying around lights.

the story starts off fast with a standoff between the police and a cult (i also thought it was awesome cuz this game takes place in my state, massachusetts :D). you're a private det. and the head cultist will only speak to you. after a mind-bending encounter, you wake up six years later, the shootout being the last memory you have. i won't go into much more detail because i'm running out of space here.

the gameplay is horror mixed with intrigue. this game can be RIDICULOUSLY hard at times. the AI is super smart. when outnumbered and under-equipped, use melee weapons to kill silently. conserve your med-kits. save often, if you mess up, reload and try to avoid injury (if you let your deep cuts go for a bit, they'll only require bandages instead of sutures, which are few and far between). this game is NOT for the kiddies. guts-o-plenty here. there's even a scene where a little girl is torn to shreds. people get mangled in meat grinders, chopped up with meat cleavers, skinned alive, etc.

there's way too much to this game to tell about here, so i'll wrap up this review. this game will not disappoint. lovecraft lovers and horror fans will adore this game. but only those with the patience of a saint (like myself). if resident evil & the like frustrate you, don't pick this game up. you'll rip your hair out & break your x-box. for those who love a challenge, this is the game for you.

Stop!!!!!!!!!!!!

The game started out OK, despite the less than exciting creepiness of the never ending load times and cut scenes. The beginning is easy enough - Then at one point you need to fall a sleep in this hotel room to follow the strangle hold story line. Up to this point you've had to ask questions & solve simple puzzles and haven't had to defend yourself which is good considering this character can only apparently duck, jump, or run while being attacked. You wake up in your LOCKED room feeling like you were drugged while 3 armed lunatics smash your door down and begin to chase you thou the hotel requiring you to follow a specific series of events which can only be discovered by being killed several or more times. Blurred vision accompanied with a feeling of running in quick sand while being unable to defend myself and getting killed over and over and over again is not scary!!!!!!! It is torture!!!!!!!!!Read full review...

call of cthulhu review

Call of cthulhu is a game you should take your time on. There are hazards and perils in the game that will make you use up all your health at once. If you mess up too bad you might have to start over from the last saving point. There are times when you will get lost or stuck on,but just keep at it. The insanity effects in the game are pretty wild, especially when your vision gets blurred and enemies are after you. One thing you will notice is that there are no numbers, statistics,or icons on the screen at any point in the game. There are no crosshairs for when you have a gun, so it makes your aim a little off. Also, you will have to reload your gun after every use. All and all, this game is fun, first person horror game.Read full review...

Great Storyline + Great Length + Decent Graphics = A Really Good Game

Overall this was a very good game. There were some issues with glitches and moments in the game where the difficulty seems to be insane whereas other moments a preschooler could breeze through.
r>In particular, there was a scene where the main character is running through a hotel as people are chasing/firing at him. Took me a few dozen times to get through it. Then there was another sequence on a boat where bad dudes were attacking someone you were tasked with protecting. There is just way too many of them and if one gets through and breathes on the guy you failed the mission. Again, it took me many tries before I luckily beat it.

The graphics were pretty decent for a 2005 game. The storyline was really impressive as well. Although the "fishmen" voice got a little irritating after a while. Truthfully, this is one of the better horror game I've played.

If you like the horror genre, you'll enjoy this game.Read full review...

Awesome game, very underrated, well worth the time & $$

This is an old favorite of mine. I think this game is extremely underrated, it has an intriguing storyline (based on writings from Amerian horror author HP Lovecraft) and it keeps you at the edge of your seat as the plot unfolds. It's almost like playing as a character in a mystery/horror movie. The graphics are also very detailed for an original Xbox game. This game is way ahead of its time. It's a MUST if you're interested in playing a psychological horror/action/mystery themed game, and it's definitely a memorable gaming experience.Read full review...

Amazing video game.

This game would definitely be one of the firsts in it's kind. A very eerie psychological horror game. Use strategy to escape your ruthless enemies. Lose sanity and drive yourself mad, possibly to suicide if you aren't careful! Quite a beautiful story line behind it. Very mysterious, in the beginning of the game you're to investigate a mysterious cult which makes me think of The Manson Family (Charles Manson), or possibly The Night Stalker (Richard Ramirez). If you're into horror/sci-fi/action or any other of genre related, this is definitely and amazing game, and quite hard to find! I prefer this over many of the newer console's new games! 10/10 for sure.Read full review...

Call of Nothing Special...

Played this game for about an hour tonight and wasn't empressed at all.
It had some ok parts to it which was mainly the use of fear in the game but all in all this is just another first person adventure game. Im a big fan of Lovecraft and was super pumped about this guy before release. I am soooo glad that I just rented this one and didn't waste a lot of money on it. Don't get me wrong... If you luv first person adventure games then you may like this one. I just wasn't a fan.Read full review...
