Upgrade

I have owned the MK1 version of this lens for several years. It has always proved an admirable work horse doing everything it needed to very well. I decided to suffer the serious pain in my wallet and upgrade to a mk2. I have to say that as soon as I started to use the mk2 I immediately noticed the difference...it's sharper across the whole focal range with a noticeable improvement in colour saturation. Where it really scored a bullseye was when you blow up to larger sizes. In short despite the frightening price I don't regret for a second spending the money.Read full review...

Nice and sharp fast telephoto zoom

For event work this is essentially the go to long lens. Sharpness is good and focus is fast. For landscapes this a little better at long end and at 70mm the edges can be a bit better on 50mp cameras. The situation is essentially the reverse of the f4 version, except the difference is perhaps less noticeable on f4 one. That's 50mp where very few lenses resolve even close to that resolution.
This lens absolutely doesn't tolerate cheap filters, which completely destroy sharpness. Premium filters are ok.
Finally, if I ever got r system camera, I would not consider the RF equivalent because of plastic materials and extending design.

My best buy

I debated getting this lens for over a year - I already have a 100-400 and have read so many articles telling me why i didn’t need the 70-200...but f2.8 really does make a difference.

Only a week and this has become my default lens - it lives on my camera, which is always close to hand: lovely, smooth movement, great results.

Why did I wait so long?

Superb Lens

Superb Optics, smooth controls and robust construction make this lens an absolute joy to use. With good focusing and apperture control the pictures really "pop" and background "bokeh" is so easy to manage. Probably the best Canon lens I have ever used.Read full review...

Fantastic lens for the price

This Canon 70-200mm L f/2.8 lens is fantastic, it's wide aperture unchanging means I can take pictures in low light at all focal lengths. I got it for less than £1,300 too, wow!

Amazing image quality from this portrait specialist. A must have lens.

Quite simply the best lens I have ever owned. Consiering I own 3 other L Series lenses with my 5d MkII, that is high praise indeed. Stunning for portraits, very fast with IS. Perfect for weddings without the need for flash. Amazing in the studio. Great for sport where very long length not required. Invest the not inconsiderable sum for a well looked after used example, and you won't regret it.Read full review...

Best lens for general photography by far

I consider this to be the best lens for general photography especially in low light. Works equally as well with a 1.4x converter on both full frame and cropped frame cameras.

Incredible Lens

The version ii of this lens is simply outstanding. It lifts the quality of your images to another level with less effort than before. The low light performance with IS is much better and handheld shots at 1/8s become feasible even at 200mm.

As a professional wildlife macro photographer it has totally changed my game. If you put a 20mm extension lens on this it becomes a 200mm stabilised macro lens. While not 1:1 it's hardly the point, you can get incredible detail and precision from much further away without disturbing the subject.

From a portraiture and landscape point of view the crisp sharpness of the images are simply breathtaking.

It's outrageously expensive, but worth more than every penny!

Don't hesitate with this one.

An excelent all round very high quality lens

superb build quality with good image stabilisation, gives pin sharp images, carring case tripod ring & lens hood included as you would expect with a lens of this quality and cost. this is a large fairly heavy lens better suited to those with larger hands.Read full review...
