Brilliant point and shoot compact camera

Firstly let me say that I am not a camera expert, far from it!!

I bought this, second hand IXUS 700 with the intention of cannibalising it and using the screen only to replace the one on my wife's IXUS which is broken. We can still use the camera but can only view in black and white.

When this replacement arrived, it was in as good a condition and worked equally as well as our original and so we decided to use this camera rather than risk damage to both/either when changing screens.

Also, included in the price, we gained a nice case and a spare battery.

We are extremely pleased with the quality of the camera and the product is just th right size for my wife's handbag!

A calculated risk.

The camera is non-functional at the moment. Whether that can be resolved I can't say. I took a chance because I damaged my original one. Sadly I lost.

Cannon PowerShot SD500 / IXUS 700 Digital Camera

This very compact, sleek 7-megapixel digicam is amazing. Smaller than the proverbial deck of cards but about as thick, the SD500 (Cost £250 when first released) is truly a go anywhere point-and-shoot digicam. It slips so easily into a pocket you'll take it with you everywhere and that's a good thing since you'll grab great spontaneous photographs all of the time. And it's light years ahead of any cameraphone, today's chic casual photography solution.

The all-metal SD500 has a 3x optical zoom with a 37mm-111mm range (35mm equivalent) that mirrors the classic film point-and-shoot zoom. Unlike 20th Century film cameras, this one has a large LCD screen to frame and review your images (2 inches rated a decent 118K pixels). This camera does not have all the bells-and-whistles found on higher-priced Canons but it's clearly not designed for the frustrated Lee Friedlanders out there. It's for the person who wants style, convenience, simple operation and good quality… meaning about 99 percent of the people on the planet!

The battery life is excellnt the only thing that lets it down is the movie mode compression so you need to have plenty of sd memory cards if you intend to use it to video lots!

Its a good all round camera for when you need it and excellent at macro / close up's for ebay !

Canon PowerShot SD500 / IXUS 700 Digital Camera

I've just bought this camera on behalf of my school as I already knew the model. I have had this camera for many years now and it is fantastic!

Easy to use as a basic pick up and point but with many other features and settings for someone looking for a little more. Its solid but compact. I've never had a bad picture yet. I love the bracketting facility which has enabled me to get natural pictures of people who usually take bad photos. I've taken this camera around the world and really hacked off my fellow 'serious' photographers with their huge zoom lenses by repeatedly getting the best shot!

The feature that meant I just had to get this for school is the video. It does not have a cut off time like the rest. It will keep going until the memory card is full. I have recorded a whole school show on 2 memory cards (one for each half just incase, over an hour) , downloaded it onto the PC as simply as you would photos and then treated it like any file off the 'real' video camera, editted it and burnt it onto a DVD with captions, transitions etc.

In the days of everything needing to be recorded 'for evidence' this is going to be a real boon in the classroom whereas the real video is too cumbersome and time consuming.

Great camera, reliable, simple and robust yet still small enough to pop in a handbag.

Ixus 700 is great

Context - my first digital camera, bought second hand for £90 in 2007.

Excellent picture quality - and to my eye colour quality/options.

Digital and optical zoom easy to use and function very well.

Software easy to use and seems adequate.

Video works well enough - need large memory card to make it worthwhile.

Have not found any problem with battery life.

The screen suffers in bright light, but I expected this and was one reason for buying this camera with the tradition viewfinder as well.
