Canon EF 70-210mm zoom F/2.8L IS USM Autofocus lens

This lens is over engineered, very much like Mercedes of old. The price you pay for that, I should say immediately, is WEIGHT. I haven't checked the specs, but this lens feels heavier than the 100-400 mm Canon zoom, and this lens is a bit of a monster! Having said that, however, it is extremely well balanced, especially on Canon's 1D series of cameras; after all, that is what its really made for, isn't it?
Having got the "cons" out of the way, this lens ticks every "pro" box in both senses of the word! It flicks noiselessly into crisp focus at full aperture, and I find that I can hand hold it easily 3 stops slower than should be comfortably possible, with absolutely no camera shake whatsoever, when IS is operating. The standard bimodal image stabilisation system allows for full IS, when the camera is being used for normal functionality, but also, one of the settings disables lateral IS when the camera is being used for panning. In the latter mode, only up and down movement is inhibited, as regards camera shake prevention.
Once you get used to the weight, and the fact that ice packs and a personal physio/trainer are needed the next day, you will find that stunning images are produced in the most difficult lighting conditions. The last comment is obviously tongue in cheek, and the mass of this lens, in many ways, aids stability, provided you have the muscles to use it properly!
If you want a technical assessment of the lens, I would refer you to the web, where Canon itself, amongst others, provide excellent performance comparisons, as regards resolution, sharpness, blur and Bokeh etc. I will be using this lens whenever I can justify the weight versus performance penalty. You will find it becomes one of your favourite lenses for short to medium telephoto work, provided you are close enough to civilisation to sit down and rest from time to time!
If unsure, go to your local photography supplier and try it; better still, rent one for a few days to make certain that the lens is totally comfortable in your hands, and in your life, before making that inevitable, deep hole in your pocket!
