Always love Johnny Depp!

All these years and I'd never seen this remake. Tim Burton has his own rather queerly dark and grotesque style, and many feel that this version doesn't equal the one with Gene Wilder (? was that his name). I haven't seen that one ever either so can't compare. I always felt these were kids shows and now I am a senior adult--am I getting younger ya think? That reversal into childhood that comes with old age? Maybe! Cause I also bought Depp in The Corpse Bride Burton cartoon. Helena Bonham Carter, being Burton's real life partner-"wife," is also featured in both. Cute flick, but not really for me. Dvd was in perfect condition though, and Seller great.Read full review...

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

If I had never seen the original, I would have liked this better. Depp does a great job at being the weird and wacky Willie Wonka. He is made to be too feminine for my taste, but loads of people like him in this role as is. His past is rather macabre, and is brought up by flashbacks. Charlie is just as good in this movie as in the original - a wholesome, poor kid, who loves his family more than anything else. I thought it was neat they gave him a father (not so in original). His grandparents were good, but one granpa has a rather foul tongue but the father covers Charlies' ears, so we can't hear it either! They changed from the original in a couple ways - Charlie and grandpa don't drink fizzie stuff and float to the ceiling, and Slugworth isn't after any everlasting gobstoppers, so if you are waiting for that, don't. One nice touch was that you got to see the bad kids leave the premises in their reformed(?) state. The oompah loompahs are incredible - and are all played by ONE man - there's a great side show on how they did it that's fun and very informative to watch. The ending is different, too, but good. The whole movie is a bit "darker" than the original Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. But, for kids who have never seen the original, they'll probably love this movie.Read full review...

Definately different that the original

This movie is quite different than the first. Johnny Depp and the personality he portrays puts a whole new twist to the movie. He makes interesting comments and facial expressions throughout and also takes us into his past to see how he has become this way. I would have to say it makes it more of a movie directed towards adults than the original. I really enjoyed the original movie and already had an idea of what this one was going to be about and then when I started to watch it I felt that some of the parts that seemed important in the first movie were taken out and should have remained the same. Although in contrast to that why redo a movie and make it exactly the same if the original was as excellant as it was. I would recommend renting this movie. The colors and songs ought to be worth checking out!!Read full review...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005, DVD)

While Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had Johnny Depp starring as the lead role it was much like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The story line was just about the same and actually the people who stared in it as Charlies Grandparents weren't as good as the ones in the first one. Actually I like the first one better than this one, willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory would be my pic as the best one.Read full review...

ORIGINAL vs. REMAKE

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of my all time favorite movies as a kid. Of course, I was always a big fan of Gene Wilder, then again, I'm a huge fan of Johnny Depp as well. Although I thought the modern technology and brilliant colors in the new version of the movie were outrageous and delightful, I honestly liked the original better. A Lot of the movie parts differed from the original which I don't adept to very easily. For example: the part where the 4 family members are all in the same bed... It wasn't like the first one exactly and I actually noticed a few things that were quite different which I wasn't crazy about. Initially, many people and critics gave the new version ratings that weren't very confident and nearly everyone said that Johnny Depp was to weird for their liking. I on the other hand was quite intrigued by Depp. His character was a tad loopy and that was what made him charming. I am a bit partial towards Depp anyway. At any rate, I would recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. I'd even go as far as buying the DVD for my children and myself. In fact, having the original and the remake in the home could make for some interesting conversation. I hope this helps and encourages you to go rent the movie.Read full review...

A Little Creepy But Still Fun

I love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. They have made some of my favorite movies - Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow - but this one is not a favorite.
I did like the movie and it was due a remake - blasphemy, I know. But to appeal to a younger generation you need a fresher look, especially for amovie like this.

Bright, loud and super fun. The story is great and actually truer to the book than the Gene Wilder version. While that one had a psychedelic vibe this one has a creepy vibe, but since it is a Tim Burton film it is to be expected!

Can't Beat The Original

I had really high hopes for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it couldn't match up to the original. This version tells the same classic story with a modern edge for a new generation of kids. The movie shows a more advanced and more twisted chocolate factory, which serves to better hold the attention and wonder of today's children. Willy Wonka, played by Johnny Depp seams crazy and intriguing... a little disturbing, the Oompa Loompa's have lost most of there charm and mysteriousness in this version, and Charlie is the same good-hearted little boy.
I enjoyed the original movie so much more. Willy Wonka, as psychotic didn't work will for the movie. The visuals were more intense, but not as interesting or as intricate. It was like watching my favorite musical performed by junior high students, where songs are replaced by modern ones and the costumes are less dramatic. Stick with the original.

Another Terribly Overrated Burton Movie

I am a huge fan of the original movie. However, I despise this one with every fiber of my being. First of all, I generally hate Tim Burton's work. The way he has to make everything so... gothy makes my blood boil. Johnny Depp looked like a pedophile. The movie is said to be funny in a dark humor sort of way. It isn't. My main beef with this movie is the way Burton completely mutilated the role of the Oompa Loompas. Only one dwarf? Seriously. To make things worse, the Oompa Loompas sing songs written and performed by Danny Elfman, whose one and only partially listenable song is the Simpsons theme song.

If you have any shred of dignity, you won't buy this movie.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This Film surprised me. When I was a young boy, I saw the original movie ["Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" starring the amazing Gene Wilder] and was an instant fan of this classic tale of good and selflessness that made us all root for the young boy, Charlie. While this quirky, new, 'revisit' motion picture clearly has the stamp of it's Director, Tim Burton all over its story, it too has a presence and a compelling cast of characters that my children are enjoying a great deal. Like the original, this new remake now titled, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is a great film the whole family can enjoy. 5 StarsRead full review...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Good movie entertaining, its similar to the original, maybe a bit more story line, prefered the original oompa loompas but the new one is growing on me, found out it was only one that did all the parts, if you've seen the original, might as well see this one and go from thereRead full review...
