A great series! Kellie Martin is an exceptional actress and portrays her character (Catherine Marshall) with great finesse. Going from a privileged and sheltered life, Catherine goes to the impoverished Smokey Mountains where she encounters ignorance and poverty to an extent she's never known or seen before. Catherine strives to make a difference in the lives of the children she teaches in a remote schoolhouse. Being only nineteen years old, Catherine has a lot to learn herself.Read full review

The sound level is WAY too soft

I LOVE this series, but the sound level is WAY too soft. It's extremely difficult to watch because it is so incredibly quiet. We have to turn our TV (which is a modern one, not old and broken in any way) all the way up to 100% volume. And even then, if people are talking or humming or anything, we miss parts of the dialogue.

The show itself deserves 5 glowing stars. It's amazing. I love everything about it, the setting, the characters, the storylines, etc. The picture is much clearer than the old VHS tapes I used to have. They MUST fix the sound level on this though. I hate giving this three stars, but this is almost not worth watching. :(

Good family entertainment

Wholesome series that was very well acted.
A story about a young girl fat the turn of the century(?) trying her wings on her own helping out at a mountain mission house as a teacher for back woods mountain children. It follows her story along with theirs as she gets to know them and their families and struggles with understanding their ways and trying to help them go forward in life. It also shows her love interests of both the native mountain Dr. and the transplanted preacher and her indecision on who would be best for her.
Nothing that would not be fit for kids. Very family orientated and entertaining on a back to good family programming level. Made for tv in the 90's with well know tv actors. I appreciated the talent in it bring well filmed and well acted!

I loved it!

Great series. Kelly Martin is wonderful. I just wish they finished the Television series with all these original actors. The did at least finish the story of Christy and her wedding. Even if the used a different Christy. It's called Christy A New Beginning.Read full review

“Christy” — A Gem

A beautifully orchestrated drama series, about real people...compellingly portrayed...about the power of faith to sustain us through our deepest trials and setbacks. On every level, this series was consummately crafted, not to mention: set amid the stunning mountain landscape of Tennessee. The only question in one’s mind is why a drama so beloved and with such potential (so much room to grow) did not continue to air on CBS , at least for another handful of seasons. No answer to that could possibly satisfy; where there is a will, there is a way. Fine art should be brought to fruition. CBS or some network should bring it back — snatch it up once again — with incomparable members of the original cast: principals Tyne Daly, Kellie Martin, Diane Ladd, Randall Batinkoff, Stewart Finlay-Mc Lennan, as well as the impressive supporting actors. The scripts will continue to inspire, as they move the characters and their encounters forward in time.👌🏻Read full review

Excellent Series with Great Actors and Actresses

Excellent series with great actors. Based on true story of a real person. Great Smoky Mountains Scenes. Christy has been done several times by different movies productions but this is far the best version of Christy that I have seen. The only negative I can think of is that is only 1 season for the whole series. This could have been made into a 3 year series at least before they ran out of stories. They could of done like the Waltons which was based on Earl Hamner Jr's real family back in the mountains of Schuyler, VA that created stories that may not of happened in real life to the characters of Christy but still provide good quality TV. Christy - a series worth watching

This is a very engaging story of a young girl who feels called to go and teach the children near a mission house deep in the hollows of the Appalachian mountains in the early 1900s. The lives and stories of nearly all of the characters intertwine through the different episodes as Christy faces a multitude of issues while trying to understand the people and their customs well enough to teach the children the "three r's." Many of her difficulties are self inflicted simply because her affluent childhood stands in stark contrast to the extreme poverty surrounding the people and the community of Cutter's Gap. Her efforts to both teach the children and learn from them as well bring many rewards as she is slowly accepted as a "safe" outsider. There are several spin-off story lines that give depth to the characters and meaning to some of the people's seemingly strange actions and unusual beliefs. One of the best characteristics of the series is the family friendly story line and atmosphere. But don't be fooled into thinking it's all a protracted church service or a recitation of Christian platitudes. Far from it. The story is based in reality and tackles issues relevant to that era and ours as well. It's all in all an enjoyable experience worth taking the time to watch and watch again later.Read full review

Incredible and awesome!

Amazing! Keeps you on the end of your seat. So entertaining, and gives you a whole education on the culture of the Appalachian people. The characters are awesome. There is nothing but wonderful about this series, and it has moral character to it. I only wish there were more episodes to see. I balked at paying $40 for the used dvds. It was well worth the price! I will be sad when I don't have a new episode to watch.Read full review
