A film like no other..

Review of Nouveaux 2disc edition(2005- film released in 1985) ,the extras on disc2. interviews with the main actor, director & production designer + 2 short 'propaganda/newsreel' sections from the '40s, filmographies & a picture gallery .
On disc1 is the film (137mins) ,it has an English dubbed version -& also the much better Russian language original + subtitles available on this disc. both versions are in 5.1.audio. This isn't really a 'war film' as such, but a film about a boy and his experiences in 1943 Belarus as the Germans are dealing with partisans( & civilians) ,one section is inspired by actions during 'Operation Cottbus' .there are no 'Defiance' style heroics here,in fact there are no actual battle scenes but mostly grim survival or death. This film blends the realistic with the occasionally beautiful, strange & surreal ,The closest in tone to this is the film 'The Tin Drum' from 1979 .Some people won't like this film- .For others it will be an experience & something they will never forget.

Anti-war film, unsurpassed in its field.

If you see one 'war' film in your life, make it this one. A brutal and uncompromising look, through a child's eyes, at the horrific slaughterhouse that was the Eastern Front of World War Two. A grim but spellbinding insight into the clash of Nazi and Soviet ideologies and the resulting effects on the civilian population.Read full review...

Oh My Gosh!!!

I bought this film for my studies but I cannot believe how good this film was. Would make it better if it wasn't dubbed. Some literal stomach churning bits, a bit confusing but you kinda get it in the end. Watch with the subs on as some parts are very quiet.Read full review...

Come And See (DVD)

Elem Klimov's Belarussian epic is one of the greatest war films of all time... but you've probably never heard of it. A then-15-year-old Aleksei Kravchenko plays Florya, an eager recruit to World War Two's Russian resistance, whose experience of battle (and eventually genocide) is told as a nightmarish coming-of-age journey. It's impossible to overstate its impact and magnitude, even 21 years after the film was made.
Although packaged over two discs, the extras are peculiarly sparse; however, what we do get is insightful and gripping. Highlights are interviews with Klimov and an adult Kravchenkov - the latter's descriptions of the horrendous filming conditions putting piffly Hollywood moaners to shame. It's no wonder the film itself is a revelation: Come And See is slow, surreal, horrific and terrifying, much like its devastating subject matter. Be prepared to make room on your Belarussian war-film shelf.

Come and See

I decided to buy this film for my mum as she is an avid foreign film buff and has been wanting to buy this for an age, so she was thrilled to hear I had found a very good double dvd restored digitally for brilliant picture quality. She also liked the fact that the choice of english subtitles or dubbing are available on it aswell as subtitles are a hole lot better!!. This film also doesn't portray war in the "Hollywood" way and is not glamorised in anyway and is very true as to how it was. Is recommended for all you foreign film buffs who want a truely good film to watch. My mum recommends it!!Read full review...
