This series will not disappoint. Spotting so many actors/actresses from the past is fun
Brilliant series! Great acting and gripping.
The first case in the series was a little slow to get started, (in my opinion) but, after that it really got going and was very engaging to watch. Robbie Coltrane was superb, as expected.
Robbie Coltrane,
Geraldine Somerville,
Christopher Eccleston,
Ricky Tomlinson and a host of other cast members, many will recognize, will not disappoint.
I bought this series to keep, it's one of those production that can be watched again a few years later and will still feel fresh.
Well worth every penny.

Coltrane plays the smoking, drinking, womanising, foul--mouthed, but highly intuitive police psychologist in this hard--hitting drama from the 1990s
Cracker is a high-volume emotional ride, with murder, brutal mental and physical police interrogations, substance abuse, adultery, and very frank descriptions of human nature, at odds with social taboos. The (anti)hero, Fitz, played by Robbie Coltrane, has a dual nature. On the one hand, he is a professor of criminal psychology, and therefore very highly educated. On the other hand, he revels in his primitive Celtic heritage: smoking, drinking, womanising to excess, and expressing contempt for any civilised conventions which limit his freedom of action or expression.
He lives, on and off, with his handsome wife, Barbara Flynn, and his 3 children, the eldest of whom is a grown-up layabout. At work, he is admired by the younger Geraldine Sommerville, a rising homicide detective. Heading the homicide department in Manchester is the young Christopher Ecclestone, aided by some rather old-fashioned policemen, not above some 1970s-style strong-arm tactics on suspects.
Ecclestone continually calls Fitz in to help him solve difficult murders. Fitz is excellent at picking up small clues from a murder scene and combining these with his intuition about the motivations and state of mind of a typical violent offender. Although this often helps identify a likely suspect, the lack of unambiguous physical evidence usually means that the suspect has to be broken by a long, drawn-out interrogation. Such scenes must be great fun for the actors, allowing free rein to their emotions. However, they can be a bit rough on the viewer, made sensitive by decades of living in gentler times.
Overall, Fitz is an intriguing character, the acting performances are excellent, the murder plots are interesting and sophisticated, and Fitz's private life provides amusing subplots. However, this is definitely 18-rated material, and one might not want to watch the entire box set in a couple of weeks.Read full review

Great believable stories and excellent acting.
Robbie Coltrane is the perfect actor for this role. We loved the stories first time round and we have thoroughly enjoyed watching them again while we have been in lockdown.

Brilliant.
I watched this series when it was on first time round in the 90's. Saw the box set by chance on eBay & bought it. It was even better second time around. It's better than anything on TV these days by a mile. The acting & writing is superb. Every episode keeps you on the edge of your seat. Well worth watching.Read full review

Brilliant series with excellent script and fabulous acting
This is a really compelling series. Fitz, the main character, is so complex and believable, and so clever, one cant stop watching. I'm so thrilled to have a new crime series to watch - this is one of the best ones I've seen. I never watched it when it was originally aired (I was too young, probably) but it's dated really well. The script really is top notch and the premise is irresistible.Read full review

Great viewing, well acted
I remember this from it's original transmission, it seemed quite edgy and hard hitting at the time. But in these days when anything goes and the F word is obligatory in all adult viewing it was refreshing for me not to be cringing every few seconds and wondering what the F word added to the dialogue. So I have really enjoyed some true adult crime viewing, from a great writer, well presented by class actors.Read full review
