Minor nits, but a good router.

This is easy to set up and has many features. My favorite is the new QoS engine. It's a breeze to set up and much welcomed. Seems to be as powerful as my older high power router. What I really don't like is the total lack of network device activity LEDs. Then there is the fact that if you mount it on the wall (like mine) it's upside down and all your cables enter from the top and hang down over the unit. Whoever designed that should have his brain examined. One way or another I'm going to remedy that, as it looks like hammered dog $hit. Otherwise, it's good, especially the wireless speeds. ****Extended review...Now that I have used this for nearly a year, I have a better feel for this unit. It is quite reliable, fast and easy to set up, at least for me. None of that has changed. However, the software is absolutely atrocious. Along with the lack of activity leds (which make quick assessments much more difficult), the exclusion zones are either on or off, no other control is available. Although the QoS is easy, I don't see that it is really effective, at least as far as my old DIR628 is concerned. Units on the network are poorly described at best (some are 'unknown'). Most of the computers do not show their MAC and it can't be found. My DIR 628 has by far superior info and controls. I can see that I WILL be going to DD-WRT, Tomato or other such firmware.Read full review

awesome router

This is an awesome router. I have gigabit cable for internet at home. I first bought a 50 dollar TP-Link Archer A7 it promised gigabit speeds but no. max speeds i got from the archer was maybe 240mb/s with only one device. so i ditched that thing and built a software based router (I'm in IT thats what i do) due to the CPU speeds available on the machine i built it on, i was getting around 430mb/s on a good day. again, only one device.

i took a chance and purchased the D-Link DIR 885-L configured it and bam. I get around 980MB/S (Due to signal ingress cause of a bad splitter in the wall that i cant get to) and this is with about 29 devices on my network. This router looks like its a drone and wants to take off but it is also a really nicely engineered router. Even IF it is about 2 years old. The one i got was NEW just in an opened box. All its warranty stickers over some ports and the plastic wrappings were all in tact. This router is also a "Gaming Class" router which means it has a good CPU and it can handle its own for sure. It also features a VPN server which i use a lot. This router also supports DD-WRT which is an awesome alternative to OEM firmware. That's another reason why i bought the D-Link.

The TP-Link Archer A7 also has 2 forms of VPN server software as well as VLAN tagging which is nice if you have separated LANs on the same switch. I have a 48 port managed gigabit switch running my network at home. VLAN tagging is helpful if you know what to do with it.

Died after 1 1/2 months.

Like the title stated worked well until LAN internet stopped working the about an hour later the router just started a boot loop. Trying to fac. reset sends it to recovery mode. I uploaded 3 different firmware for this model and it would continue the boot loop.
NVRAM needed to be wiped. not something most people can do.
THESE ARE NOT WORTH THE MONEY

Useless, returned in the first week

October 2019 ... Does not stay online. Drops internet. Tried new cables, firmware updates, numerous resets, etc., etc, but this router will not stay online for more than one hour. Tech support is useless. Router is no longer under warranty, requires premium paid tech support from d-link. This item is NOT on manufacture direct warranty and the tech support is NOT free. Buyer Beware !

I am back using a 6 year old Western Digital. It may be slow, but it is reliable and stays connected.

Thought I needed a mesh system... I don't with this router!

Great price and awesome range and throughput. I'm not a "power" user, but I do know that I've bought three of these to replace other routers that I've had at my home as well as rental properties that I own. The old routers just wouldn't cover the distance in the houses which made me think I needed to get a "mesh" system. But once I installed this router, I realized that I didn't need to! Yay! :)Read full review

Love it

I don't understand the poor reviews I've read on this router, it's blazing fast, was easy to get set up and it's worked flawlessly ever since.

D-link product, worked as advertised.

Easy to install, just follow instructions. Best to use with PC and windows interface. Just need to remember to rename guest ssid for router, else default is no password and nearby peeps can get access. Just rename the guest ssid for the router and set the password. I have 250 mbps internet & this works great. For a 2018 era router, in July 2020 - perfectly functional & you don’t have to pay $300 plus for the latest router with the bells & whistles that you wouldn’t ever use.Read full review

DO NOT BUY!

Absolute garbage, straight out of the box constant boot loop that factory reset wouldnt even solve. The 5G never worked and besides all of that it is discontinued with NO available technical support. If I could eat the money I would destroy it with a hammer (it's that bad) but I cant. Do yourself a favor and buy anything else.Read full review
