Review of Dead Like Me

This was a terrific, highly amusing, really interesting and very quirky series for two seasons on the Showtime Premium Channel starting in 2003 through 2004.

It's about a rather depressed 18 year old girl who calls herself "George", that suddenly loses her life when a toilet seat from a Russian satellite lands on her when the satellite breaks up on re-entering Earths atmosphere. Immediately upon her death she finds out that she's been chosen to become one of many grim reapers who roam the world, and the series follows her through her various reaping assignments and how she learns to live as one of the "Undead".

Great casting and story lines made this series a cult classic. So much so, that the calls and letters to Showtime complaining about the series cancellation finally resulted in a direct to DVD movie release in February of 2009 called "Dead Like Me-Life after Death".

Starring Ellen Muth as Georgia Lass AKA "George", Mandy Patinkin as
Rube(Boss of the Reapers), Jasmine Guy as Roxy(a meter maid/police officer reaper), Cynthia Stevenson as Joy Lass(the joyless mother of Georgia and her sister Reggie), Greg Kean as Clancy Lass(Joy Lass' hapless husband), Laura Harris as Daisy Adair (an ex-movie actress reaper), Callum Blue as Mason (a ne'er do well reaper), Christine Willis as Deloris Herbig (as in "HER BIG brown eyes", Georges' supervisor at her "Happytime" day job), and Britt McKillip as Reggie Lass(Georgia's younger sister). Other cast members include: Crystal Dahl as Crystal(the receptionist at "Happytime"), Patricia Idlette as Kiffany with a "K",(waitress at the restaurant where the reapers meet to get their daily reaping assignments from Rube), and Talia Ranger(a "Younger" version of George in flashbacks from her earlier life). Dead Like Me - Seasons One and Two

This was originally an HBO series that is the best little hidden treasure ever!
Most actors were fairly unknown but brought their characters to life superbly!
Actor Mandy Patinkin is the lead "Grim Reaper" who assigns his employees thier jobs for the day, which are always a surprise and appear to him in the form of a post-it-note at "Der Waffle House", where the cast meets every morning for breakfast.
The series deals with death in an unusual manner-partly funny, partly mystical but decidedly not frightful.
This is a DVD set I will share with anyone I know who has an atypical sense of humor. Once you start watching it, you can't wait for the next episode.

Dead again

I had the oppertunity last fall to meet Ellen Muth the star of Dead Like Me and before then I had never watched the show. Meeting her made me interested in seeing exactly what it was all about. I first saw an episode a few months ago on Sci-fi and from then on I was hooked. Muth plays a young sarcastic and somewhat depressed girl who is killed by a toilet seat falling from the sky. She soon after realizes that she as well as others have become grim reapers. These reapers walk amoung the living and live lives just as the living do. Each episode the reapers are giving a paper with a name of someone who is schedule to die and the reapers must make their transition to the after-life as easy as possible. The show also stars Rebecca Gayheart, Jasmine Guy, Laura Harris,Mandy Patinkin, and Callium Blue.
The show is funny and full of surprises. It has a good mix of drama as well. Allthough it may sound a bit odd it is a very welcome change from the ordinary tv show. I believe that anyone with a sense of humor will love this show. It has a way of bringing humor to a dark world. Each episode brings you a new story and many diferent death senerios.
From falling toilet seats to revolving doors this show gives you a humoristic look at death.
And for the record Ellen Muth is just as adorable in person as she is on this show.Read full review...

Dead Like Me Season 2

Really great series.
I really enjoyed season 1, and this was equally great.
As a mother of a young disgruntled teen girl, I enjoy seeing the interactions between the mother, father and two daughters.
The characters are so well suited to their parts, and so believable in them.
Only thing is, I liked these so much that I purchased the follow up movie, "Dead Like Me", and it was a big disappointment. Mandy/Rube, and also the actress who played Daisy, were not in it, or the waffle house or the waitress who had worked there.
All of these things, and people had really made the original, and it just came across as a quickly thrown together straight to video attempt to cash in on the popularity of the series.
The story lines made no sense, based on the original series and they had the characters doing things that were completely out of character.
That was a real shame, as with a little more effort they could have produced something good, and chose not to put forth that effort.Read full review...

Excellent show. I'll miss it.

After watching only the first episode from Season 1, I could already tell that this series was going to be a favorite of mine. It's dark humor mixed with an interesting variety of characters including the sarcastic Georgia (George) was enough to addict me, and it even overcame my expectations by throwing in excellent directing and acting and aesthetically pleasing footage. Learning about each reapers' pasts along with their deaths was a great addition throughout the plotline, as well as the inventive ways that the victims die.

I'm greatly disappointed that the series was cut; I would have begged for it to continue. However, Season 2 managed to give an alright sense of closure by the final episode, even if some things felt incomplete or untold.

I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys a great dark humor filled with the sarcasm of rebellious youth, irony, and sparky wit.Read full review...

Very Good Show

I really enjoyed watching this show. I saw season two before season one but it didn't seem to damper the watching effect of the show. A weird twist on what happens to people when they die, some become Grim Reapers. And from this bunch, you know anyone anywhere could become one. The episodes are great with comedy and sometimes drama. The special features on the dvd set included deleted scenes, which is always great. The only thing about the show was they got you into it and then cancelled it back in 2004. I would have loved to see at least one more season of this show.Read full review...

Already Have Season 1? - Complete the Set

Are you a "Dead Like Me Fan"? Already have DLM Season 1? Enjoy hearing the "F-Bomb" used repeatedly in absurd situations? If so, then you NEED the DLM Complete Second Season.

Season two of DLM continues the "adventures" of Georgia (George) Lass, an unfortunate young lady who became a Grim Reaper when she was killed by a flaming toilet seat from the reentry of a Soviet Space Station.

Overall, the humor in season two is not as effective as season one, but still very worthwhile for DLM fans. Unfortunately it seems the writers had no idea that there would not be a season three, so the resolution of many issues and questions remain open. Of course, this does come in handy for the creation of a DLM movie.

If you're a fan of George and the rest of the DLM team, or simply enjoy the 'official' DLM Drinking Game (1 drink/shot each time the F-bomb is used - WARNING: You WILL get hammered by the end of each episode), then season two is highly recommended.

Dead Like Me? I'm A Fan!

I was accidentally introduced to Dead Like Me around Christmas late at night on TV. I immediately found myself liking the episode, so I bought Season 1, watched it and liked it! So I bought this Season 2 series.

The show is quirky, has lots of offbeat characters and while it's about grim reapers doing their thing, the plot lines are engaging, the stories are warm, funny and entertaining. To me, anyway. I truly recommend it to anyone who can handle the slightly morbid with a comedic twist.Read full review...

Dead Like Me - Season 2

My son told I would like this series and brought me the first season. I had my doubts - reapers? Sounded too strange for me. After the first episode, I was hooked. The acting is superb and the writing is tight - funny, sad, touching - it hits every emotion and sense. Mandy Patinkin, who could read me his grocery list and I would sit is awe, is wonderful in the part of Rube. The other characters are just quirky enough to be not only interesting but fun. One would think this show would end up being macabre. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Try this series. You'll like it!!! You'll laugh. You'll cry.
