Definitive Technology W9 Wireless Network Audio Speaker

Great product, bought the refurbished model. This was an excellent buy. Plenty of power and really puts out the sound. Runs on Wifi but I prefer bluetooth so purchased a bluetooth adapter and runs much better from my iphone. Great design, very heavy speaker. Great quality speaker. no bass and treble adjustments, however still sounds great. !! Connectivity to other Definitive speakers, which is awesome and comes with a pretty good control app.Read full review

Fabulous Sound but Play-Fi software is a miserable experience

To start off: the speakers are great. The build quality and sound quality are excellent (better than the Sonos to my ear). However the Play-Fi system is really not ready for prime time. When it works, which is about 60% of the time, it's great. When it doesn't work, which is all to often, it's annoyingly frustrating.

I have a total of 6 speakers in the house using the Play-Fi system. Typical problems I see on a consistent basis:

1. Spotify groups just don't work well. Sometimes one or more of the speakers simply doesn't start up.

2. Sometimes all of the speakers start up, but at least one does not show up in the Play-Fi control app so even though it's playing the right thing, I can't control the volume.

3. Every once in a while the system starts up fine, but one of the speakers will be out of synch (like a half a second) with the others.

4. The implementation of Spotify groups (which is what allows you to use multiple speakers playing the same thing) is really bad. You can't define more than one group that contains the same speaker. So for instance I can't define an "all" group that contains all of my speakers and then subsequently define a "bedroom only" group. Nope, can't do it. You have to remove the bedroom speakers from the "all" group before you can put them in the "bedroom" group. That makes switching between sets of speakers a miserable process.

5. Don't try to use a phone to control the volume unless you like really loud music. The volume control sliders are really hard to control and at the low end of the scale a very small movement of your finger results in a huge change in volume. This can be mitigated by using a tablet where the screen resolution is much better (haven't managed to install the PC version yet, that could be the potential answer).

In the end, I absolutely love the sound I get out of these things when they're working. However every single time I try to use them I end up repeatedly having to fiddle around with the configuration of the system in order to get them all going at the same time. I'm geek enough to be able to survive, but my family doesn't have a prayer of controlling the system.

If you only buy one speaker it will probably work GREAT. If you buy more than one, well be prepared for great sound but frustrating contol.

Mind blowing sound...

Before spending big bucks on speakers, I decided to dip my toes in the water with the W7 from def tech. Needless to say, the sound from that little speaker was amazing and I decided to expand with another w7, a w studio, and a pair of w9's. Amazingly, the awesomeness of the lil w7's was eclipsed by the w9s by quite a bit. They still have the crisp sound of the 7's but much more depth at the low end. And these babies can get LOUD! I don't think I've gone over 65% yet and they are still exceptionally loud, yet still sound as good as ever.
My only quarrel is with the DTS play-fi app technology itself. Since that isn't necessarily the speakers fault, I won't ding a star. It's not that it doesn't work, it's just that the interface is a little chunky, and the connectivity can be buggy, particularly when u have a lot of conflicting wifi devices. I have an extensive home automation system that sometimes causes conflicts. Resolution requires occasional device or router reboot to get all the ip addresses back in order. It only takes a min or so and doesnt happen often, but in todays tech oriented society, it can get a little annoying.
But i have zero regrets on going with this system and certainly

Bought 4 of these

Owned a single unit some time ago, at least a year ago. No problems at all. The sound is very good, although an equalizer sure would help as you change through music styles, but by no means a deal breaker. Classical through classic rock is fantastic, as is jazz, and blues. Just now and then if you go too much into heavy bass music styles, the bass overwhelms even as the gorgeous clarify of the mids and higher notes is clearly there. Def Tech mentioned PlayFi, the app that runs the show, is planning on adding an equalizer, I still haven't seen it.Read full review

Amazingly good value

The boxes they shipped in were a bit beat up (clearly had been returned), but the devices themselves were absolutely immaculate. No problems with setup or use. It's astounding how much sound comes from these little boxes. The W7s are good as well, but if you have slightly more space the W9s are the way to go.Read full review

Best WI FI Speaker

Have 2 W9s and 1 W7. Both are awesome speakers but the W9 is way better in sound. Not even close.

Great sound but doesn't seem to work with Jriver DLNA

If I could get J river to send audio to these units I would but several more. The sound quality is quite good and the price bajarunner is selling for is unbeatable value . The definitive app works well for streaming but is limited when browsing your own collection.Read full review
