Downfall DVD (German with English Subtitles)

I decided to buy this DVD because I am a student studying both Modern European History and German. This DVD was therefore a perfect choice. The film itself is brilliant, with a fantastic performance by the actor in the title role. I also got it for under £5, a superb buy. Highly recommended to all who are interested in WW2 or German culture, or anyone who just wants a good film to watch!Read full review...

downfall

the lead actors not only look like the persons they are portraying but also have the persons persona. the film tells a story that every one knows but from a different angle, the action scenes are fantastic and the uniforms are spot on to the originals.
it leads you through a nieve young girls story from the days she joined the highest person in the land adolf hitler to the day she escaped with her life feeling let down and ashamed to have taken part in this period of history with every thing that had taken place.
it also shows how hitler felt betrayed by everyone around him for not obeying his orders and how illness (parkinson's) warped his sense of mind.
a great film that everyone should see at least once to get the true story from someone who was there and lived through it in every sense of the words.

Downfall, or Der Untergang as per original title

I bought this DVD after seeing an extract of it used in a spoof for the "wrong bike" which if you are a Biker you must go and look at, shortcut below-
http://www.brainsweb.co.uk/uploads/the-wrong-bike.wmv

After watching the spoof it made me think let's see the whole film.
This is a very good film and by all accounts is a good representation of the last few days of Hitler and the Nazi regime.
There is a tremendous atmosphere, almost threatening at times.
You keep feeling why did people put up with this at the time, but the menace of Hitler and those around him is truly scary.
Have we learned from this dreadful times? Don't think so when you look at some of the terrible atrocities that are still allowed to carry on in the world at this time.
Good film and worth a watch - enjoy

Downfall (DVD)

Brilliant film. Subtitles (Original German soundtrack)and post-production washed-out colours help to give this film an authenticity. Not many films have me glued to the screen throughout, this one did. Bruno Ganz as Hitler deserves all the accolades he's received. It would've been easy to portray Hitler in the usual characteristic monstrous way, but all through there is light and shade. At once almost engendering sympathy for him then having the viewer shudder at his familiar demonic ranting. No violence for the sake of it, and inspite of the fact that the outcome is known to everybody, still sort-of keeps you fascinated by the unfolding events.Read full review...

Downfall

A fantastic film which I think is the most realistic war film based around Hilter that I have ever seen. The film is based mainly of Hilter and his henchmen in his bunker in Berlin and the actor who plays Hitler is absolutely superb. A brilliant film that I would recommend to any enthusiast on the history of world war 2.Read full review...

Downfall (DVD)

It’s the dying days of the Third Reich. As the Red Army storms into Berlin, Adolf Hitler (Bruno Ganz) is holed up in his underground bunker, cynically refusing to surrender. Inside this claustrophobic labyrinth, teeming with doomed and drunken Nazis, director Oliver Hirschbiegel gives a harrowing (and scrupulously accurate) account of a ranting dictator who’s lost the plot. But Hitler also created the greatest personality cult the world has ever known and Downfall shines its torch on those still stuck in his orbit, including naïve secretary Traudl Junge, propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels and his blinkered wife Magda.
Brilliantly acted – not least Bruno Ganz’s battering-ram central performance – Downfall received brickbats for daring to show the Führer’s human side (he cuddles his dog!). But that’s Hirschbiegel’s point: he wasn’t an otherworldly fiend, which makes his actions all the more frightening. Downfall’s not out to provide any answers but it’s still one of the most compelling and commanding films of the year.

A great Downfall...

I've always been fascinated about National Socialism, the third reich, Hitler and such and I was told that this film was definately a one to watch and it definately is if you're into this sort of thing and curious about knowing more about the downfall of one of the biggest power machines the world has ever seen.

Bruno Ganz plays a convincing Hitler during his and Germany's downfall and I love the fact that it is a German film and not an Americanized film about Nazi's.

Bruno Ganz makes the best Hitler

Most Youtube users will be familiar with Downfall since scenes in the movie are used as parodies for world events but the actually movie is a very good movie that offers a better view of Hitler than some portayals of him as just a ranting and raving madman. Bruno Ganz really should have won the Oscar for his portrayal of Hitler in his last days of power of the crumbling Third Reich, in which he is deep in his bunker beneath a devastated Berlin.Read full review...

One of the best films ever

I bought this because it was highly rated, but didn't relly know what to expect. Well its 2.5 hours of superb viewing, great acting, particularly from Bruno Ganz as Hitler. Its a great piece of history, and crams so much in, like the last hours in Hitler's bunker, the end of the war in Europe, hoe the German people reacted etc. Don't be out off by the subtitles, this is unmissable. Highly recommended.Read full review...
