Elephant Walk Is Much Better Than Critics Have Said

Elizabeth Taylor makes Elephant Walk a much better movie than it has been critically evaluated. The story is similar to "Rebecca", but the cinematography and costumes far outshine the earlier movie. Elizabeth Taylor is at her height of beauty, and the costumes make her shine even more. The sets include a panoramic view of the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and is well worth watching as a travelogue. The mansion itself is beautiful. It seems that no cost was spared in making this movie, which initially was supposed to star Vivien Leigh.

The story itself revolves around the rich son (Peter Finch)of a tropical tea grower, who is still haunted by his dead father. He marries an English woman Ruth (played by Taylor) with no idea of what she is getting into. She becomes the only foreign woman at the plantation and is overwhelmed by the seclusion and the domination of the male plantation supervisors and her husband. There is also an Asian male houseman similar to the housekeeper in "Rebecca." The mansion is vulnerable because it lies in the path of where the Elephant tribe likes to plod toward the sea. The result is similar to the earlier movie.

One difference is the role of Dana Andrews, who provides a temptation and an oasis of security for Elizabeth.

This movie was underrated when it came out and still is. I don't know why. It is every bit as good as "Rebecca" and stands out for its cinematography and star power.

Elephant Walk (DVD, 2005)

Ruth Wiley (Elizabeth Taylor) is young English woman who marries a wealthy Tea planter John Wiley (Peter Finch) from Ceylon. Off to his plantation "Elephant Walk" so named because it was built across the historical path established centuries ago by elephants moving to water. At first excited by her new surroundings, she soon discovers that her husband is
a totally different man than who she thought she was marrying. Strange goings on mar their relationship like wild drunken parties with English friends where indoor polo is played and other activities are ongoing totally consuming his time. Ruth soon is very lonely. Eventually John becomes distant, and with John's old friend and plantation manager Dick Carver (Dana Andrews)her only friend, a relationship soon develops. Her house now more like a prison, she begs Dick to take her to Paris. A cholera epidemic breaks out and the entire house is quarantined. Suddenly, the elephants become very restless and take back the Elephant Walk.

REBECCA meets THE ELEPHANTS!

Take the plot of REBECCA, add a love triangle, and throw in a scene straight out of THE BIRDS...only with elephants...and you get ELEPHANT WALK. I have no idea why this film got bad reviews when first released. It has gorgeous scenery, brilliant technicolor, a top-notch performance by Elizabeth Taylor, and the elephant scene which is truly frightening. Maybe Elizabeth winds up with the wrong man in the end...or maybe she doesn't. So many romantic movies are so obvious that they're hardly worth watching. This one will keep you guessing, because both men have their strong points. This is one of my all-time favorite films, an epic story that stands the test of time.Read full review...

Elizabeth Taylor was ABFAB! I think this was one of her best movies. She was stunning and the surprise towards the end which was an accident, she handled with wit and courage. She was one of the most beautiful women in the world. Read full review...

Saw this many years ago. It's still a very good film.

Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Finch both do very well in this film. Now I remember why I enjoyed it so much. The elephants were very admirable too.

Very good movie

I have always liked this movie. The copy that I had was stolen with about 300 others when my home was broken into, and many other very valuable objects.
