Still does the job 5 years later...

Now that EA Games lost the F1 license to Sony, this rare Xbox gem (which is Xbox 360 compatible) is the only chance at playing Michael Schumacher for Xbox owners. Sony's upcoming P3 F1 release promises to set new standards for realistic game play, but even so, the game won't make it to the U.S. because of our affinity for watching facsimiles of the cars we get at airport rental counters go round and round in a circle (NASCAR). (Ironically, the newest NASCAR 07 release from EA Games is NOT XBox 360 compatible...none of that series is). So what's an F1 fan to do?

In 2001, EA Games released F1 and for its time, the graphics and the physics are top notch. In simulation mode, the physics are almost too good, and go along way towards demonstrating how difficult driving one of these machines actually is. In "normal" mode, however, driving becomes easier, although still quite challenging.

With a variety of gameplay, from single race to full champion series, there's something for everyone. But be aware that when you're in the Grand Prix mode, the realism extends beyond just the vehicle dynamics. As everyone knows in F1, there's an hour for practice, and then an hour for qualifying. So too in the game. While its possible to end both sessions early, if you end the qualifying early, even if you're on the pole, someone can come from behind and take it. So you're best bet is to spend the full hour. THEN start the race. This means, of course, that a single race can take up to two or three hours (though the race itself can be as few as 4 laps). Make sure you have the time, because if you leave the session, or the race early, you have to start over.

Graphic are only fair by today's standards, but were pretty state of the art five years ago. But they're good enough still so as not to detract from the experience.

If you can find this game, its rarity alone makes it worth adding it to your collection. For Xbox fans, it's the only F1 game in town, and a must have until F1 decides to license it to others besides Sony. The fact that it's a great driving simulator makes it a must have.Read full review...

Electronic Arts has been making computer games for a long time. I remember EA games written for the C-64 which were hours of playing fun. Now with new and faster hardware, the games are more challenging and the audio video also more accurate. Simulations are not easy since scaling should be proportionate to reality.Read full review...

Great game for 2001

This racing game is good for the year it was made, however, after playing more recent racing games (Forza Motorsport, MotoGP3 URT), the gameplay seems a bit skippy. Other than that, it is a fun game to play and the race-driving techniques you learn are applicable to the real world. Very fun to play but it requires very fast reaction times. I would recommend this to anyone who has the old Xbox but still wants a Formula 1 game to play.Read full review...

One of the best F1 race games ever!!!!

There is not so many Formula 1 games out there,and for the Xbox,this is the only one I know,I bought the game for my Xbox360,it is playable on it,and plays very well,an Excellent game,a lot better than the PS2 version...that I also have,the Championship is the 2001 season,it would be great if they continue making this games in the future!!!

F1 IS GREAT!
