Failure to Launch (2006) Movie Review
It's a Keeper! Funny, Witty and Very Entertaining
I watched Failure to Launch on an afternoon flight from London to Miami and laughed at practically every scene...but that's me. Laughing out-loud on an airplane was getting a little embarrassing, but what the heck, I was having fun.
The appealing on screen chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker, and the great-story line, made Failure to Launch entertaining from start to finish. Their characters, Tripp and Paula, meet when Tripp's parents, played by Kathy Bates and Terry Bradsaw, hire Paula, a professional who specializes in getting 30+ year-old men out of their parent's home and living on their own. Paula describes Tripp's condition as "failure to launch."
Paula and Tripp's best friends, Kit and Ace, played by Zooey Deschanel and Justin Bartha are non-conventional characters. Kit has a dry-sense of humor and Ace is a nerd. But when they meet up, Kit and Ace provide some of the film's funniest lines. Deschanel was well-cast as Kit and she added much to the films overall charm.
The strong character development and great esemble cast move this entertaining and funny film along. You come away wanting to spread the word to your friends that this one is worth seeing.
Failure to Launch is already out on DVD at the time of my writing this review. It's well-worth renting. I added it to my home DVD library so I can enjoy it over and over again. This one's a keeper!

Not the same boring romantic comedy.
So many times a romantic comedy bores you with the same old predictable story. With two good looking people falling in love, a dry-humored "tell it like it is" roommate, and two parents desperate to rid the house of their adult son, Failure to Launch exceeds expectations for a romantic comedy. Sarah Jessica Parker has made a career of "dating men" in order to cause them to move out of their parent's homes. Matthew McConaughey is one of these men and she is convinced he is an open and shut case. Of course, his charms are too much for her to resist and she falls hard. Sounds like the typical romantic comedy, right? Wrong. This movie adds so many other facets that you end up loving it. Sarah Jessica Parker has the most hysterical roommate who reminds me of Linus from Charlie Brown. McConaughey has multiple encounters with animal attacks (the proof he is at odds with the natural world)and these scenes are hilarious. The only complaint is that the ending takes a turn for the cheesy and you are left wishing someone could have been a little more creative.Read full review...
Cute but Predictable!
This movie was pretty good. I thought it was kind of cute but then I am a Matthew McConaughey fan anyway. Tripp (Matthew McConaughey) is a 35 year old still living with his parents. His mom waits on him hand and foot from wonderful food to laundry service so why would he want to leave? His mom and dad are desperate to finally get him OUT of the house so they hire Paula (Jessica Parker)to fall in love with him and hopefully make him decide to move out of the house and on his own. The two hit if off and Paula has Tripp right were she wants him when Tripp finds out that Paula was hired by his parents to date him. Needless to say..he fights back and winds up moving out in a huff, Paula feels bad and is really in love with Tripp in the end. Realizing that Tripp and Paula are actually in love, the friends and family scheme and plot to try and get the couple back
together. Like I said, it was a cute movie and worth watching...but in the end the couple falls in love and gets together...predictable.Read full review...

At 35, Tripp has an interesting job, a hip car, a passion for sailing, and a great house - trouble is, he lives with his parents. They want him out, so they hire Paula, an "interventionist," who has a formula in these cases: chance encounter, get him to ask her out, involve him in a trauma, meet his friends and get their nod, delay sex, have him teach her something, then launch him. It's worked up to now, but this gets complicated when Tripp thinks she's getting too serious and one of his pals is attracted to Paula's deadpan, semi-alcoholic roommate, who's plagued by a mocking bird. Failure to Launch - My Life Story
Okay, so I'm not 35 years old like Tripp (Matthew McCanaughey), but this movie tells the familiar story of kids who just won't move out (like me!). His mom (like many moms do) does everything for him from cooking his meals to washing his clothes. Although his mom doesn't seem to mind too much, she and her husband decide it is time to get him out of the house. So they hire Paula (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) to date him and make him want to be independent. Paula is a professional get-sons-out-of-the-house and has a reputation of succeeding every time she is hired by parents like Tripp's parents. But Paula makes a big mistake with this "job" by falling in love.
This movie is a good chick-flick but I watched it with a lot of older single guys and a couple girls and we laughed the whole time. Although Sarah Jessica Parker is not the best-looking actress, her acting was very good in this movie. And Matthew McCanaughey pulls off a very convincing role.Read full review...
Funny Film, Clever Topic
After seeing the title, I thought this was a promo for viagra sales, but after viewing, I realized it dealt with another topic altogether, lol. This folm deals with children who will not leave the "nest" which has became more common place in modern times. This was a very funny film at times, is star studded, and explores a new meaning to sacking the quarterback. I feel Terry could have used a brown bag to cover his exposed behind, but the protection must have broken down...For laughs and amusement, give it 4 stars****Read full review...

"Failure to Launch" is a funny, too-true tale of how some men find it difficult to leave behind the comforts of their parents' home long into adulthood.
Trip (Matthew McConaughey) meets Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) after the consultant is hired secretly by Trip's parents to get him out of their house. Paula is convinced she has a full-proof system to nudge a man from the nest, but things get complicated when feelings between the two develop.
The laugh's are found in the sideline characters, from the Mom (Kathy Bates) and the Dad (football's Terry Bradshaw) to best buds Kit (Zooey Deschanel), Ace (Justin Bartha) and Demo (Bradley Cooper).

I did purchase this DVD from someone on Ebay. Unfortunately I never got it, the person kept my money & is no longer a registered user on Ebay...:( I hate when that happens!
Anyway, I did end up borrowing it from someone & saw it. It was a very cute movie but did not like the chemistry between Matthew McConaughey & Sarah Jessica Parker. I do love them both as actors. I have almost all of McConaughey's movies. Though I would probably not watch this one over & over like I do How to Lose A Guy in 10 days, it's worth watching anyway!Read full review...
Finally a show that treats mom and dad.
Smart and sexy show for adults. Rated PG13 for sexual themes and brief nudity. The plot is simple and runs into a few delightful turns. Violence consists of targeting a pesky mocking bird with a BB gun, and a frolic at the paintgun park. This show goes easy on the psychological explanations and invites you to share in the fun. Be prepared for a happy ending for the love birds, their friends and even mom and dad. It is rare that this genre of program can be pulled off, acting and directing was first rate and the producers created a real gem.Read full review...
Not A Failure
I loved this movie..Finally a comedy that doesn't rely on four letter words and nudity..yes, there is sex, but nothing vulgar..Kathy Bates is the perfect Mother..loving, nurturing, a Friend, a good cook and funny..yes she is very funny..Terry Bradshaw is hilarious as the Father..Sara Jessica Parker and Mathew (I can never spell his last name)was the cutest couple..this movie goes easily from being funny to being sentimental and back to funny again something few movies can do..this movie is great for both Women and Men..grab those sodas, pop that popcorn and prepare to laugh yourself sick!!Read full review...
