Brilliant design makes a tough job easy
Ok, so if you are not going to hire a mechanical turf stripper you need the most labour efficient manual alternative.
This is one of those task specific tools that looks slightly weird but in practice does the job incredibly well. Takes the wrist jarring and back ache out of turf removal.

Good quality tool
This is a substantial, well made yet light to handle tool that looks like it will last a long time. However I found it difficult to use due to the combination of a very long handle and the fact that I'm only 5'1. I found it very hard to get enough leverage to enable me to remove turf effectively and in the end I gave up and went back to my trusty little border shovel. That said, the ground and turf roots were very compacted so I don't know if it would perform better in looser soil. I will persevere though, as it could just be that I didn't get the hang of it first time. Read full review...

Good idea, limited practicality
Cutting turf is not an easy job with this tool. As other reviewers have said it needs sharpening to make it work better.
I tried lifting a metre square of turf... that does not prove easy or possible as the tool only allows you to cut around 300mm before you reach the angle on the handle. If you try to go past this by cutting further the stem that the blade is secured to rips through the turf.
