Family Guy Presents Blue Harvest (DVD)

Family Guy Meets Star Wars in a very entertaining forty-five minutes of laughter and fun that had me rolling from beginning to end. It might seem that one has nothing to do with the other and anything of this nature would be pure nonsense and a disaster. Not so, as Family Guy creator and lifetime Star Wars nerd Seth MacFarlane proves along with his wonderfully talented writing staff. Merging the two works well in his hands and bares the stamp of approval from Mr. Lucas himself, who is a long-time Family Guy fan and was pleased to let McFarlane run amuck in his far away universe of long ago.

MacFarlane wisely chose the space epics true beginning Episode IV: A New Hope as the stomping ground for his characters to retell this tale in their own comic style, which includes many over-the-top jokes and gags at other television shows expense. His choice of “casting” is great as well; MacFarlane perfectly matches his characters with Lucas’. Mother Lois plays Princess Leia while father Peter is placed as smuggler captain Han Solo. Son Chris is young Luke Skywalker and baby genius Stewie is simply masterful as Darth Vader, while daughter Meg, who is the constant “butt” of jokes, is only seen as the garbage compactor creature. Rounding out the space players are the perverted Quagmire as C-3PO, Cleveland as R2-D2, family dog Brian as Wookiee Chewbacca, and Herbert (the creepy old neighbor) as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The story begins with a power outage that causes the family to focus on each other. Rather than light candles and read or tell the story of Meg’s birth, Peter steps up to tell a tale of “Love and loss, fathers and sons, and the foresight to secure international merchandising rights.” Thus begins the retelling of SW:Episode IV. The Family Guy crew does a fine job in recreating the storyline by bringing to cartoon life the moments that captured the world thirty years earlier. The Mos Eisley cantina scene where we meet Han Solo and witness his ever-popular shootout with Greedo is a hoot as well as the opening shot of Darth Vader walking through the halls of the rebel base. The opening sequence is fun for the fact that Leia is having problems saving her message to Obi-Wan on R2’s hard drive. Throughout there are these sorts of pokes at modern technology and how they could have applied and malfunctioned in the Star Wars universe.

Great pop culture gags is what Family Guy is known for and Blue Harvest is stacked with them. Restored scenes on the DVD present Judd Nelson briefly reprising his role as John Bender from Breakfast Club giving his attitude at detention while adding on future Saturdays in the library. During the assault on the Death Star we get to see a “red role call” of a different kind that includes Red Foxx, Red Buttons and Simply Red. Smaller sight gags may be missed if one is not watching closely. For example, during the stormtrooper wedding Jesus along with everyone else has a stormtrooper helmet on. Keep yours eyes open for the unwanted advances of one soldier to another as the Millennium Falcon is being pulled into the Death Star and keep an ear out for the numerous Airplane jokes made along the way, including the quick appearance of Leslie Neilson.

Special features stand out on the DVD as well. The audio commentary is hilarious and gives insight into the warped minds of the Family Guy crew while providing behind the scenes secrets. The making of Blue Harvest is where we get to see that the entire production crew is compr

Family Guy Presents Blue Harvest (DVD)

Family Guy has been a hugely successful competitor to the reigning cartoon kings The Simpsons for many years. Having fired out over 100 episodes across 6 or 7 series, the makers decided to pay a tribute to one of their favourite movies, Star Wars - A New Hope. The Blue Harvest title derives from the code name used by George Lucas during the filming of Return of the Jedi to keep curious and prying eyes away from the sets. To get the best from this homage, a basic understanding of the characters of Family Guy and Star Wars is a great help, but not entirely essential, however it should be remembered that this is a "fan-boy" movie, so expect lots of "in" jokes and running gags from the series.

The movie itself is highly entertaining, and offers a rough-shod romp across the Star Wars story, with Peter Griffin and co. carrying out an almost scene by scene rehash of the plot. Highlights include a moving musical number between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker that seems to have been missed off the original Star Wars film offering a whole new angle to these key characters relationship. There is also some fantastic casting choices to look out for - some of them truly inspired, such as Gran Moff Tarkin played by Adam West. See if you can spot Meg....always the butt of rather cruel jokes within Family Guy.

Overall the movie is a geeks interpretaion of the original Star Wars film, but is infectious and carried out beautifully and with genuine affection. The animation has been done with great care and attention to detail, and the script is brilliantly funny.

Can't recommend this enough to fans, as it stands as the best spoof of Star Wars yet made. An essential for fans of both genres.

The special eddition contains a few collectors extras - a nicely designed, if a little flimsy, T-shirt, 3D glasses for an even greater nostalgia trip, collectors cards and a couple of other bits and bobs, but the movie itself is the important bit and is the same as on the basic DVD version.

Enjoy!

family guy presents:blue harvest

being a family guy fan, and hearing so much about the star wars special they were making, i couldn't wait to get hold of this latest film...however, it is only just a specially extended episode in reality, which is probably going to be a part of the next season split over two episodes. that said, it still lived up to the hype that family guy brings to all it's shows, being funny, crude, a little crass and littered with references to modern 'pop culture' throughout.
it was only a matter of time before they made this, as they took various elements from the films and used them in the tv show...if you are a fan, you'll know which bits.
as far as it goes for spoof'ing an all-time classic sci-fi film like star wars(which, incidentally had the working title of 'blue harvest', hence why family guy presents:blue harvest), it nailed it on the head, with lots of funny scenes throughout which made me laugh like a madman, yet they followed the original film's(albeit shortened)storyline and...btw, stewie as darth vader...class, he had a majority of the best lines.
one thing did bug me personally about this though, they got the story, but they missed out the final medal ceremony, which they spoofed in an episode from season 2...WHY MISS IT OUT????
all in all, it's a good short film, but if you are going to buy it...do what i did and look for a USED copy on eBay, as i don't think it's worth buying new.

Due for release Jan 2008 on DVD

'The Blue Harvest' is the season 6 premiere of Family Guy and is a spoof of Star Wars Episode IV: The New Hope. With each of the main characters taking the roles as the Star Wars characters, such as Chris as Luke Skywalker, Peter as Han Solo, Lois as Princess Leia, Stewie as Darth Vader, Brian as Chewbacca, Quagmire as C-3PO, Cleveland as R2-D2 and Herbert as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Creator Seth McFarlane is on top form with this one as it is easily the funniest episode of Family Guy ever. Obviously if you're a regular veiwer of Family Guy and a fan of Star Wars you'll appreciate this a lot more than if this is your first time watching Family Guy or never seen The New Hope. I think that he must have been planning this episode for a long long time as the quality and humour is some of the funniest I've seen out of all of the many episodes of Family Guy. From when the opening text comes up on the screen ("A long time ago, but strangely in the future...") you just know that this episode is going to be amazing. It's as if he's kept all of his best gags for this episode - it is that good! Highly recommended.

Family Guy Presents Blue Harvest (DVD)

This DVD - by Family Guy's high standards - is nothing to write home about. There've been a number of Star Wars spoofs in the past, the most memorable is Space Balls, and by comparison, there's more gags in that, and it's just more interesting. The trouble with doing a star wars tribute is that everyone knows the story - yet you have periods of exposition where the script is identical to the original. So you're explaining a story everyone knows off by heart (everyone who'd be interested in this DVD anyway) and losing valuable screen time for jokes at the same time.

The jokes that are present aren't that funny anyway, and i kept expecting them to make a 'massive helmet' joke because of the ridiculous size of everyone's helmet, but it never appeared :( Instead, we just get endless paedophile jokes about Chris and the dodgy old man

The weakest part has to be the last 10 minutes in which; it's an almost shot-for-shot reproduction of the original with barely a joke in the whole thing, so you're just watching a brief cartoon of the Star Wars finale.

Finally, the 3D cell shaded effects used for the space scenes look like they've been done by the futurama team and may not be to everyone's taste. Personally, i think the models are too details because it just looks 'different' from the rest of the episode.

The biggest plus is the interview with George Lucas on the extras, but overall, this isn't worth the price of a full season of family guy. I own every Family Guy DVD there is, and this in no way, compares to any of the others in terms of quality or content...

Fantastic!

Being a Star Wars and Family Guy fan, i was very intrigued to see how the Griffen family could parody the "New Hope" film in 45 minutes. I wasn`t disappointed.
Even in the first 2 minutes i was rolling on the floor with laughter and tears streaming down my cheeks with the introduction words scrolling into space, and after? the jokes come thick and fast with tongue in cheek furiosity!

Well done Seth McFarlane! I am so looking forward to the next parody, "Something Something Something Darkside"

Move over Simpsons....the Griffen Family have taken over!

An Excellent Family Guy Episode!

As a fan of the legendary "Family Guy", I decided to purchase this latest DVD to complete my collection, and I have to say I have no regrets. This episode is a parody of the Star Wars genre. And there are many laughs to be had throughout.
Once again Seth McFarlane and team have produce an inspiring piece of comedy, and it also has the full support of George Lucas, so it can't be bad!
