The ONLY hurricane lantern
I first saw one of these on a Bushcraft course 16 years ago and have wanted one ever since! I've got gas and dual fuel lanterns to he used when I need big white light for a camp, but they're cold and take away the romanticism of camping. The Feuerhand (on the other hand) provides plenty of soft, glowing light, with no flickers and no horrible hissing like the others. It's just a lovely compliment to a camp fire, making you feel like you could be in a fantasy novel.
The construction is superb quality. Don't listen to any reviews that say the quality dropped since they were bought out, I can tell you categorically these things are as good as they've always been. Solid build, yet incredibly light. The design is clever, but simple and easy to use. Make sure you leave the wick in there, wound all the way down so it is soaking in the oil for an hour or so before lighting the first time, and Bam! 20 hours of lovely light on a single tank, if you turn it down a bit even more!
Kicks off a good amount of heat too and is lovely and stable either standing or hung up, so no accidents. That said, because it's an oil lamp by necessity it isn't sealed at the wick, so if you turn it on its side it will leak, although why anyone would do that is beyond me! Otherwise it'll last you decades without leaks and if you look after it and clean out the soot (very easy to do BTW) it will probably look pretty much brand new after all that time, certainly the old ones I've seen do.
I use citronella lamp oil as it's a clean burn, smells nice, low smoke/soot and keeps the midges off at night. Very effective and so cheap it's crazy. I bought 6l for 20 quid on here, which would last months of using the lamp every night, so with occasional use it'll be years before I need more.
In summary, it's brilliant, don't wait so long to buy one like I did. They're great value and if nothing else perfect in an emergency where your gas lamp will be noisy/hot/quick to run out of fuel and your crappy petrol station LED lantern's batteries will die after a couple of hours! I love mine, you will too.
PS: Whatever you do don't buy the cheap copies, on here or anywhere else, they are all made in China out of pot metal and fall apart in hours. Dangerous too, leaking from the outset and creating a fire hazard. Spend a little extra and get a lifetime of good safe use from one of these 😉

Reliable, rugged and well tried and trusted design - They it and you'll love it
These lanterns are as rugged as they come, this is a very old, basic and reliable design. I have two of these, they never fail, are able to take serious punishment in just about any weather conditions and they still keep working. I have tried just about every solar lantern available and not one of them is anywhere close to the ruggedness and reliability of these lanterns. if you spend a lot of time in the real outdoors, not just in the back garden then forget solar and get these lanterns, they just work and don't fail when you need them most. I truly think these lanterns will last a lifetime.Read full review

Original quality
It is the original item. Simple, good value and controllable light for indoor or outdoor use.
You will need a roll of wick if using for extended times, but this is cheap enough. The simple flame control allows for a very precise flame size. Be ware as with all these lanterns the top becomes very hot! Great product. Read full review

Baby or MATRON?
Not lately impressed by today's products, but as in everything there is exception.
Solid, well made, light soft, but make well lit room, bright enough to read by it.
Great investment for many years to come. When SHTF, best tool. Life saver.Read full review

Perhaps the best available brand of storm lantern
Well made. Is said to be non-leaking but that refers to the bottom of the base which I understand has been treated internally with some sort of sealant. Storm lanterns are (?)all just crimped together without solder and generally without any sealant, which makes many of them prone to leaking. The Feuerhand ones will leak if overfilled or if sat at an angle such that the paraffin gets to the base of the filler neck. Gives a good light and does not smoke if wick kept to correct size.Read full review

Does what it says on the tin
Old school dependable product and the fact that it is galvanised means it is not destined for the recycling any time soon. Availability of spares is another plus. Remember that a hurricane lamp isn’t going to bang out a lot of light.Read full review
