Simple construction and limited fixing points means the guard feels a little bit "wobbly" when put together. Some of the side hinges (simple bent metal clasps) had become forced open during transport and had to be squeezed back together to make a secure fit. However, overall it seems more than strong enough to keep small children safe from a fire, especially when it is fastened back to the wall. I also found the nuts and bolts were of poor quality, and it was very easy to strip the threads when tightening them. I've decided to replace these with decent-quality ones from Robert Dyas or Wilko. I bought the guard just for temporary use during occasional visits by small children, and for that purpose it seems more than adequate, and good value.Read full review...

Fit for purpose
When you put it together, the whole thing needs to be lifted to put coal on fire. I have adjusted it with my own parts, so I can fold Top back to put coal on fire. Good guard for the price
Its good because its adjustable and you can fit it to the length you want. I didn't want to spend a lot on a guard as I needed it only for Christmas day when my 18 month old grandson was visiting. I put the 'top' pieces down the side to make it a bit longer and secured it with plastic tags. I didn't want to make holes in the wall to secure it so didn't use the attachments provided. I had a trial run and the guard did not get hot when the fire was burning so that is an advantage. Overall it it does the job at a reasonable price.Read full review...

Appaling instructions. The 'hinges' on the side panels are too small, it is difficult to fold these side panels into the correct positions.
The hinges for the top panels are a joke, difficult to fit correctly. These hinges should be larger versions of the side panel hinges and be fitted at the factory.

It is a bit fiddly to put together there were a couple of sharp edges, which is not good for children.
I feel that a few more joining clips would have been useful.
