Great case to be able to still get so long after launch.

Being able to get a solid side panel case that can hold up to 8 drives can cost an arm and a leg now a days, being able to grab this case at a good price is a blessing. I also happen to be a bit of a fractal fanboy so being able to grab a define R5 was a no brainer for me.

Nice roomy case that is easy to build in and stay neat while doing it since Fractal includes those nice velcro straps that make it dead simple even for a lazy builder like me to keep things tidy with cable management.

Unbelievably fantastic case but it is not Mid-anything

So yeah, all the other reviews basically have all good things about this case covered already.
My review is to address two things that kinda took me by surprise even though shouldn't have.

1. The front is completely plastic even though at first glance in the picture it looks like brushed steel. It feels pretty flimsy compared to the rest of the case. I feel like I'll break it if I just the front and back to pick it up. Or maybe I've just been spoiled by my all-aluminum Lian-Li with its sturdy rippled aluminum front doors.

2. This is NOT a Mid-tower. It's a "small" Full-Tower. The average consumer mid-tower is about 6" shorter than this case. So if you're planning to put it under your desk like I was, you can forget about it. But this is also such a fantastic case that I'm willing to find another way to set it up instead of returning it. I know should have looked at the measurements. "When something is too good to be true.... " Yeah. Just thought I'd let any hopeful fools such as myself out there looking for a mid-tower that could fit a ATX-board, this is not it.

An afterthought: it comes in the stock box you see in the pictures if you're buying it from newegg. So I wouldn't leave it sitting on your front porch too long. Anybody can see exactly what it is and what's inside, but that means Fedex people will treat it with a little more care too. So there is a good and bad side to that. I'd suggest watching the shipping tracker closely and prepare to be home to receive it if you can. If you live in a not so great neighborhood, you'll definitely want to be home. This case is worth stealing ;3

Fractal Design Cases Are Great

Very nice and well made case. Super functional as interior of case can be arraigned to suite most needs. Will make a nice compact server case with eight drive trays as well as two exterior five and a quarter exterior bays. Room for seven cooling fans with insulated noise cancelling panels. I have four other but different cases by Fractal Design in use and like there styling and design. The cases are extremely functional. It seems the designer has thought of everything!Read full review

Define R5 in 2020

This case, although older, is obviously meant for serious NAS/Server related work. Fantastic job by Fractal Design!

Great case that holds a lot of disks

Pros:
* Very good cable management. Plenty of tie-points.
* Holds 8 3.5"/2.5" drives plus 2 extra 2.5" mounts.
* Two 5.25" external bays.
* Many options for water cooling. (some of which do not sacrifice drive mounts or the external bays)
* Good ventilation. Great cooling for the disks.
* Very quiet.
* Very convenient removable air filters.
* Reversible front door.
* Mostly tool-less.

Cons:
* A very large mid-tower (but, hey! where else are you going to place so many drives and still retain reasonable cooling and good cable management?)
* Heavy from all of the sound-absorbing panels.
* Drive trays are not tool-less.
* Does not come with the second 140mm fan for the front.

Looking back, I realize that the "Cons" that I listed above, while real, seem rather nit-picking to me. I am really happy with this case, and would definitely consider it if I again need a case in the future.

Older but still rockin'

It is an older model, but its got it where it counts. Seeing as my last case was from ~1999, this is a wicked jump forward for me.

Simplicity

This is an awesome case! It is very roomy, which makes installation easy and cable management a breeze. If you want a window they have that also.
