An Obvious Choice for Quality and Reliability
This is my own honest review of the Freecom ToughDrive 1TB Mobile External Hard Drive USB 3.0
I bought this model to replace my previous Freecom 'ToughDrive' which I have used constantly and almost daily since it was first purchased in 2005. Its main use was as my photo archive back up and back then 8GB was an enormous amount of portable storage!
Sadly many hard travelled miles and exposure to hot and cold climate extremes (+54c to -14c) and wear and tear have finally taken their toll on my trusty Freecom ToughDrive. The USB connector developed an intermittent fault which I suspect is the cable fraying inside the sheath.
I researched and reviewed many of the alternatives in the market place and was amazed by how much storage was now available particularly with solid state drives. Quality and Reliability of product and price, were my main criteria and I just couldn't find anything which I could trust as much as my old drive. So I opted to replace my trusty drive with a like for like but with 1TB of storage for basically the same price as the original!
Its slim, feels sturdy and is about the same size. It fits snugly into my inside suit jacket pocket or camera and flight bags without taking up much space.
The connector feels and looks a lot more tougher and sturdier than the older model and certainly feels like it may be made of a harder and more durable rubberised product.
The USB 3 connection is simple and data transfer fast and silent, not even a murmur or vibration unlike my old drive which hummed in a quite reassuring manner whenever it was connected.
I transferred over the contents of by old drive in under 20 minutes and was surprised by just how many photos I have, a tad short of 25,000 and also a lot of files and Pdfs. It was at its storage limit but the transfer to its replacement was fast and error free.
The Freecom ToughDrive 1TB is my new main back up for my photos and personal folders, I needed a brand and drive I could trust and having used my previous model for just over 13 years without an issue it was an obvious choice to make.
I'll be back with a new review of its replacement in another 13 years or probably even more!
I re-formatted my old Tough Drive several times to ensure its quite empty, but just cant bring myself to dispose of it, we have been through a lot together and it feels like a betrayal! So it sits next to my laptop like a trusty pet and I suspect we will see out our dotage togetherRead full review
