Just the job

When in the States last year, the car hire company gave me a cheap chinese smartphone with a navigation app on it, instead of a Garmin it gave previous times. Nothing wrong with the smartphone but the Nav App was worse than useless to the point of being dangerous. The problem was that adverts would pop up while driving along, covering the centre of the map. You have to reach across and tap it to clear it, then if you hit a bump your finger flicks the map up or down and you don't know where you are. Trying to correct it whilst driving on a busy interstate, in a strange LHD car with traffic passing on both sides is nerve wracking to say the least adding unnecessary risk. Then the text for road names and next junction details is ludicrously small and fine, may be OK for a 20 year old with 20/10 vision but no good for me. I ended up using my own phone and Navmi and Google Maps, no adds but still a bit fine detail for car use.
So I bought this 2nd hand Garmin with American maps for my next trip and all was as it should be, simple to use, easy to see big text and bold graphics. Confidence inspiring and reliable. Never turn it on and having it demand an update download as apps sometimes do. It just does what it is supposed to do, nothing else to distract or frustrate, what a relief.
This model may not have all the bells and whistles of newer versions, but I do not really need them in the States, I just want to get from A to B reliably and safely, I can do that with this Garmin.Read full review

I was very pleased with the sat nav,5" screen was excellent,but all the uk maps needed updating,which for an oldish sat nav it would not have been
worth it

I liked the sat nav so much I decided to buy a new model,with free map updates
