GETTING ON - BBC Television/Vera Productions

Someone said to me the other week, good situation-comedies are hard to come by these days. This, in my opinion is one of the very best of the last ten years.

Jo Brand stars as nurse Kim Wilde, who has made the decision to return to nursing after many years away from the N.H.S. now that her family has grown up.

During her absence, the health service has dramatically changed and part of the value in this set is watching Kim adjust to the way the N.H.S. has moved on. She's charged with looking after the never ending stream of older people flowing onto the ward alongside Sister Den Flixter, Matron Hilary Loftus (played to perfection by Ricky Grover) and the 'oh so annoying' Dr. Pippa Moore.

Anyone who's ever worked with older people, particularly those who are infirm, and unable to look after themselves without assistance will see how beautifully researched this series must have been.
Look out for various cameo roles throughout by the Director of the first two series 'Peter Capaldi' - (Yes, Dr. Who no less). He plays a senior member of the Hospital Management team - and it seems Dr. Moore has her eye on him, as she's about to finalise a particularly messy divorce with her husband.

The third series follows an NHS merger with another hospital and was directed by Sue Tully (Grange Hill). Loftus has given up his job as Matron but returns to cause mayhem as a Senior Management Consultant, intent on making savings wherever he can find them throughout the hospital!!

It's as poignant as it is funny. It says much about the current state of our N.H.S. system and you don't have to look far to see why. They've even got a janitor mopping the corridors with three law degrees!! That fact that all this is so utterly believable in the imperfect world we live in makes this such immense fun.

The theme music 'Roll River Roll', was written and performed by Richard Hawley. This is a box-set every comedy fan should own. Enjoy .......
