Monsters! Aliens! Action!...British drama??
I find British drama appealing, and yet, don't understand WHY I like it. Along with others (i.e. "Remains of the Day,""Howard's End"... the whole "Downton Abbey" series)- "Gosford Park" stacks up among the best. A good murder mystery in the vein of "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Knives Out." A huge cast with their characters well and engagingly presented.
Certainly worth a spot in any good video collection!Read full review

Gosford Park - no Downton Abbey
Didn't care for this one and I really like Downton Abbey so I was disappointed. The characters are unlikeable, lots of sleeping around although very class conscious - upper class only sleeps with the staff. I enjoyed seeing Clive Owen, but other than that, will probably never watch it again.Read full review

Very enjoyable period story about life of the characters.
Like other works of Altman the character work is done so well the viewer doesn't feel the filmmaker with the story telling. His characters are shared in a world that's 'normal' for the story time period. The story telling is multi-layered like life is, so it's not a simply enjoyable film to watch, it takes more work to really enjoy it BUT it's fun to watch and watch again.Read full review

Wonderful movie.
I love this era. Downton Abbey made it knowable again, the clothes, cars, beautiful things, homes, etc. The cast for this movie from top to bottom is tops. Downton Abby was more well-rounded though, whereas this movie is not. All the Lords and Ladies of the upper classes are moustache-twisting and catty villians, and all the "below stairs" folk are loyal, patient and kind. The story-line is terribly one-sided in this way; not well-rounded at all. But still, it is a very entertaining movie and full of great actors. The cars, sets, clothes seem very authentic....it all seems very natural. I enjoyed this movie a lot but again, it is very one-sided in the characterizations. I can watch these period pieces from the 20's and 30's just for the cars, clothes, manners, etc....The service was great, fast, well-packed and DVD was in like-new condition. I recommend both highly if you like period pieces from the 1930's and SOOO well-acted and costumed....Read full review

Great Movie:)
I am a lover of the period piece. This movie has a top notch cast and a great story. Maggie Smith is my absolute favorite! It's an engaging story of murder with a well developed story and the deleted scenes are a fun edition after seeing the story so many times. It takes you back in time to a place that is so real and well researched. A very enjoyable time.Read full review

Really good drama film.
Great value, quality, characters & plot if you prefer character study over action films, which I do.

English, but not Downton Abby
Typical theme of stories of this period involving upper classes and servant classes. My copy video was slightly "washed out." It was entertaining to watch, but not great drama.

WATCH BONUS FEATURES FIRST TO APPRECIATE DOWNTON ABBEY PRECURSOR
I don't like crime but this is a psychological period drama by entertaining Downton Abbey upper-crust Brit author Julian Fellowes, that the Bonus Features making this so much more than just a movie, including still-living relics. taught me to appreciate and re-view it with and without the commentary by the consummate theater ensemble enjoying American pioneering director legend Robert Altman.
I'd watch anything with Russian/Brit-American Dame Helen Mirren; Clive Owens is always way too yummy, and handsome Jeremy Northam perfectly recreates an historic entertainer; Kristin Scott Thomas always inhabiting her characters so thoroughly it's a wonder she can maintain her own identity; and I can never get enough o' the Scots brogue of Downton's legendary Dame Maggie Smith and "Decoy Bride" Kelly MacDonald.
Similar: "The Buccaneers"; "The Pallisers"; "Jennie: Lady Randolph Churchill"; "The House of Eliott"; "Enchanted April"; the original B&W with Susan Hampshire NOT later "Forsyte Saga." Love Susan Hampshire also in "The First Churchills," Regency 1820s "Vanity Fair," and modern Scot "Monarch of the Glen."Read full review

Excellent period piece; superb acting
Gosford Park is an excellent period piece relating an upstairs/downstairs relationship taking place in a monied atmosphere in a 1930s country estate. An unexpected murder mystery involving persons with motives not easily discerned. Well acted by an excellent cast, set in a slice of history almost forgotten.Read full review

Best of Gambon
Really a great movie and Gambon in rare form. Story is engaging and it’s an interesting study of the British upper class. Fellows wrote this before Downton, so it has a feel of Downton, which is certainly a good thing. Highly recommended Read full review
