Take your game to a whole new level

We've been working with this in our studio for several weeks and the breadth Tommy brings is amazing. This covers everything from jazz to world to latin. What's great is that Tommy appreciates individual perspectives and doesn't insist you play his style - only that you play your own grooves. The beauty is that once you're comfortable, he offers several of his interpretations. I'm finding my solo and fills are broader and more diverse. Even some of the areas I don't tend to be into, when played, add to your portfolio of skills. You'll be playing a classic rock routine and find you're using bits 'n pieces of a jazz or reggae or latin fill - and it fits.

Working through the music on Tommy's DVD/CD will add to your craft, improve timing and enable you to almost unconsciously raise to another level. Beginning students, intermediate and even pros will benefit. The grooves he uses are (mostly) all good - but that depends on individual taste. I particularly like the off beat grooves and the fact that the music makes "sense". I've played a bunch of Dave Weckl's music, for example, and he plays at such a level it's difficult to follow with all his timing changes, etc. Nothing against Dave - he's incredible - but to play his music you've got to really be solid whereas Tommy's work helps get you to that level.Read full review...

SOOOOO worth it for drummers of all skill levels!!!!!

There is not one thing I didn't like about this video. Tommy Igoe is a master of communicating the passion and persistance that drumming (True Drumming)calls for. I bought both Groove essentials 1 and 2.0 and I am not sorry I did. I have been a studio drummer and recorded several albums in the past 4 years. I was educated, uplifted, and inspired just by watching the DVD's. I absolutely recommend that if you want to become better or become great on the drumset, you have to add this to your instructional library. It will change the way you look at playing all together. This video is definitely worth every penny I spent! If you come across this review and you wonder if you should buy this video or not, don't hesitate for one second. I have been playing now for 19 years and consider myself to be a student of percussion always looking for a new or different technique to add to my toolbox. The best you can get to learn new grooves properly, period!

There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that compares to Tommy Igoe Groove Essentials 1 & 2.

I was a pro drummer for 40 years, retired due to health, but still drumming. When I decided it was time to learn some new stuff a few years back I grabbed Tommy’s stuff from a friend. Now I own both volumes, and could not be happier.

Rock solid bread & butter grooves explained in a down to earth way. NO extra talking bull, no fluff, every min of these videos are packed with teaching & demonstrations. You will not find a better package for any drummer that is at least an advanced beginner and above.

Groove Essentials is Essential for YOU

If you would like to purchase one of the TOP drum instructional DVDs on the market then you have just found it. What you have here is stright forward instruction on the grooves every drummer should know in order to become a versitile player. I would recommend getting the book to go along with it, as the book comes with a CD full of play along tracks for each groove. Other DVDs that I think hit the mark for Drum Instruction are Dave Weckl's "How to develop Technique" and especially "How to Practice". Carter Beauford's "Under the Table and Drumming" CAN'T BE BEAT and you won't find a better tuning course than "The Drum Set Crash Course - Tuning Edition" by Russ Miller.Read full review...

Great DVD! Builds grooves from the ground up! Entertaining too!

Tommy Igoe is not only an awesome drummer, but an incredible instructor too. In the Groove Essentials DVD, Igoe takes you through playing really cool drum grooves for all types of music. He breaks down each groove and builds it from the ground up. This DVD does not come with an book.

A book/CD combo with the same name (sold separately), provides sheet music and drumless music tracks for every groove that he discusses in the DVD.

One of the best Drums' DVDs ever made Lots of ethnic rhymes well explained.

This is likely one of the best DVDs about drums ever made.

I love latin music and Tommy explains a lot of rhymes in a basic but nice way as if he was really your personal teacher. Also jazz, some rock, funky... everything you need. And there's a second edition already.

NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF MISIC YOU PLAY, YOU'D NEED THIS!

If this is not the one, it is one of the most important drums instruction's DVDS that I have ever bought. I agree with almost all that he teaches understanding that he is showing a basic example of every rhythm.

If you haven't learned with a good drums teacher, here you'll find one that will show you how is developed the groove in many basic styles, how important is to keep your own groove and some advices that you will really need to hear.

The Groove Essentials series are a terrific way to develop as a drummer. Combined with the book, you have a classroom and lab on a variety of drumming styles and grooves.
