A quality basic Layer 3 switch

This is the 50 port version of Hewlett Packard's ProCurve 2600 series switch family. When upgraded to current firmware, it is a very capable unit, suitable for use in an environment requiring support for Class of Service/Quality of Service handling, multiple VLAN support, and inter-VLAN routing for TCP/IP based communications.

As a basic model, the layer 3 capabilities are limited. Only 16 routes can be handled and only TCP/IP is supported at Layer 3. It is also a FAST ethernet switch, with 48 10/100 ports and only two gigabit ports, shared with two GBIC slots that can allow for optional fiber interfaces. With gigabit being almost the base standard these days, this switch would not serve well in a very high bandwidth demand environment, but for many normal offices and sites it will do quite well. The high density of ports (50 ports in a 1-U chassis) is a definite plus for crowded comm racks, though you do have to deal with the fun of neatly routing up to 50 cables in that limited space.

We purchased this unit as a testbed for our existing 2626; all VLAN and CoS/QoS testing will be done on it before being implemented on the production switch. Having a test environment is GOOD.Read full review...

Best port density on the market, lifetime warranty, lifetime tech support, layer 3 routing at wire speed, command line and gui interface(s), 2 GB/GBIC ports, low power consumption, I can go on and on. One of the best dollar per port switches out there! Granted it is a little dated but still performs very well in a low to medium traffic environment!Read full review...
