Good value for money but tricky to set up

I bought this, on the basis of price and reviews, to replace an old HP 3070A all-in-one printer and it does seem to be good value for money. The print quality is good and I don't think the replacement ink cartridges are too expensive (non-HP cartridges are available at a lower price but I don't know yet how well they work). It's not a very fast printer, but that isn't a problem for me. To set it up you have to use the HP Smart app, and of course my phone was too old to support the operating system required to download the app! Luckily I have a newer iPad so I was able to download the app onto it and use this to set up the printer. Once the app was installed the set-up was fairly straightforward, although I don't know what personal information HP now hold as a result of me downloading the app. Once the printer was on my wifi network it was quite simple to connect it to my non-Apple laptop, which is the device I usually print from. I don't know how someone without a smartphone and some technical ability would get on. Another point - it's not clear from all the photos, but unlike the HP 3070A, the paper is fed from the back of the machine, not the front, and the feed tray sticks up above the top of the printer, so the overall height is more than I thought it would be. My printer sits between two shelves and this one only just fits, whereas the 3070A fitted easily. However, it's doing what I need it to do, and it wasn't expensive, so I'm quite happy with it. Took a computer expert 2 hours to connect to my laptop, he said it's the most difficult he ever had to deal with

Just too difficult for the average user to connect to a lap top or other remote equipment. Usually a new printer comes with a CD and can easily be connected. This printer needs someone with a great deal of knowledge to connect. I tried but in the end had to take it to a computer expert who admitted it took him 2 hours. Good enough.

Print quality seems very good. Start up colour cartridge will only last a couple of days so you'll have to buy one almost straight away. I'm using it with an oldish HP Pavilion desk top and the printer will not print images I've stored in documents(won't give me the print option). It's possible that this is something to do with the PC but I'm not sure. It took it a few goes to recognise the set up software but downloading this was easy if you stick to the instructions. When printing it's a bit noisy. Works very well with Word - quick and clear. Seems to be fair value.Read full review...

Cheap and effective printer but don't send one to your Granny if you can't go round there and help her with it.

I got the printer working quite quickly but the instructions weren't that good and I had to use a few "leaps of faith" based on experience with other printers. For example it only worked when I connected it with a cable; the cable was supplied in the box, but none of the advice actually said to plug it in. It is now working well to print and scan over the cabled connection. I can print to it wirelessly from my phone too, which is great. Weirdly when I take the cable out, I cannot print to it wirelessly from my laptop. The ink seems to be very expensive, but I expected that.Read full review...

I recommend

This is a good company to deal with and they send off their products soon after ordering. They are obviously refurbished but hey, that's better than paying full price. It's my second one as I managed to smash the fist printer accidentally. I already purchased the 301 toners and had installed the driver for the previous printer, so it was very fast for me to set up again. It's working fine and I'm happy with it. Read full review...

does have good features if you have time to set it all up

this printer drove me up the wall, it nearly went out the window a few times, it was long winded setting it up, once on button is pressed it takes ages to actually come on, time between pressing the print button to the document being printed takes along time. if im printing more than 1 page keeps coming up with a paper jam/error....i wouldnt buy another HP again.Read full review...

Superior printer for a sensible competitive price.

had a HP previously, and then purchased a competitive brand, oh what a mistake to make!.
Easy to set up and is user friendly.
Ink levels are on display and monochrome prints are easy to select without multiple key strokes.
