Nostalgic music from 50 years ago

Listening to this cd took me back to when I went to see the original 1968 show. The show was brilliant & so is the cd,,,,,,albeit there are half a dozen songs which were not on the 1968 cd !!

However, I am well pleased with the purchase, & now have some new songs to sing along to.Read full review...

The definitive version.

Back in the 1970s Reader's Digest did a "Hit Parade" boxed set on vinyl, which contained many compilations including this 1968 London Cast recording of "Hair". I used to love listening to it as a child although, perhaps fortunately, I didn't understand the lyrical content. I just loved the performances and songs. Thankfully this CD isn't the edited vinyl copy it contains all thirty-four of the original songs from the production in sound as clear and live as if in the theatre.

"Hair" was the first musical of the Hippie Generation epitomising the movement of the 1960s focusing on war, theology, authority, drugs and sex. The show had been a controversial breakthrough for its opinions, nudity and colourful language. Additionally, it produced hit songs for Nina Simone, Oliver, Three Dog Night and Paul Jones; and many established performers began their career in this production of 1968, most notably Paul Nicholas long before he became "Just Good Friends" in the 1980s.

Despite this musical's controversial lyrics it's great fun to listen to (I've never seen the show only the film) and there's some fantastic vocal performances on it. Given it's subject matter there's a lot of adult language including referenes to race, drugs and sex, but don't let this put you off and enjoy classics such as "Aquarius", "Aint Got No" and "I Got Life".

We were so much older then, we're younger than that now!

'Hair' probably says more about the 60's/70's than any other music of the time - free love, the growing interest in ecology and the environment, changing attitudes towards race, homosexuality, the police and the military. It was a statement of our time - and it remains so.Read full review...

Original Score-Hair (CD 1997)

I bought this CD because I went to see Hair the Musical in 1969 and was completely won over by it. I had the album but for many years have been banned from trying to play it as it is so scratched it is sometimes just a blur!

Just by playing it it takes me back to the Shaftsbury Theatre and I can relive it all over again.Of course many of the songs have been used as adverts so it is always there. At the time I like a lot of others did not probably fully understand all that it was about but it did not make the enjoyment any less.

Of course you have to play it loud so I tend to play it alone. The entire CD sounds just as good as it did all those years ago. Any body who hasn't listened should at least try it once.

Does seem strange that I can be listening to Paul Nicholas singing on my Hair tape aand the next moment he is on the television playing a doctor in The Royal Today, but we have all changed and moved on!

The CD is absolutely brilliant and anybody who has only heard about Hair because of how controversial it was should listen to the brilliant music.

HAIR the original cast

As a youth I loved the show didn't understand it but hey! I wasn't being asked to fight in Viet Nam.
I'd forgotten how much swearing there was in one or two songs and the song 'Sodomy' seems now quite childish now.
that apart the other songs bring back all the memories of life in the 60's.
