Costner & Paxton are the patriarchs of the Hatfields & McCoys, two feuding families in late C19 Appalachia. Their dour turns make this a long watch

Good: The Romeo & Juliet subplot enlivens a long, dour retelling of the famous family feud. The plot is well-explained. Tom Berenger is the most fun, as Costner's foul--mouthed side kick and attack dog.

Average: The period feel of this piece of C19th backwoods US history is only OK. It doesn't match Deadwood, or the 80s miniseries, North & South, set around the same period. Both Costner & Paxton are very dour, and even Powers Booth is relatively low key.

Poor: Some spring scenes are shot in what is clearly autumn.
