Painful story; well-done production
This story by Anthony Trollope is often painful to watch, as it focusses on the self-destructive behavior of a young married man in the 1850's. He becomes consumed by jealousy over his spirited, if rebellious, wife whom he met in the West Indies and then transported to London. She flirts incessantly with other men, in particular an old friend of her father's. When told to stop, she agrees but then goes back on her word. This starts a downward spiral of the husband from which he never recovers. The couple's young son is perhaps the biggest victim in the story as he becomes a source of endless intrigue and eventual kidnapping by the husband. Casting, scenery, set design, and remote locations are all first rate as are the performances of the many leading characters. The message has to be watch out who you become enamored with to see if they will really fit into your life. Also, avoid jealousy and suspicion of your spouse lest you become consumed by negative consequences. For a more upbeat depiction of life in 1850's England see "The Barchester Chronicles" by the same author. This must be one of the best dramas ever done by the BBC with many lessons for today. An outstanding cast, led by Donald Pleasence, Nigel Hawthorne, Alan Rickman, and Geraldine McEwan, is featured.Read full review

A bit aggravating
This story line make you want to reach through the tv and shake some sense into certain characters. How much wasted time on what he THOUGHT but not reality.

Great movie
This is a terrific movie. The characters are brought to life with love and compassion. The actors who portrayed these characters seem to become the character they played. The movie is very real and life like.Read full review

Not worth the time.
There is one recurring thread in this story -- a neither interesting or engaging argument that keeps beating it's head to no productive end or conclusion. It's a boring story with no direction forward.Read full review
