What a waste of my time
There aren't many books I struggle through - but this? If I find a book tedious (too much description and not enough narrative for example), I skip through all the descriptive stuff and pick out the narrative, just so as I don't have to plough through what I feel, for the most part, is irrelevant. However, even the narrative I found baffling, hints of this, hints of that, but nothing concrete. I am the sort of person who will look at (a film) or read a book till the bitter end, hoping that there is a glimmer of something, which often leads to disappointment on reaching the end of a long and tedious plot for it to come to nothing. Whether this book does reach a satisfactory conclusion or not, I have no idea as half way through, I put the book down, never to pick it up again. It has been given to a local charity shop. How it won (is it the Orange Prize - see? I can't even be bothered to find out what award it attained) any accolade at all is beyond my limited comprehension. I rest my case.Read full review...

Brilliant summary of religious and warm hearted family dealing with failings and life in general
Exremely well written. Difficult subject especially the over powering religious indoctrination of family
