Poignant, complex, beautifully written and acted - but no Hollywood ending!

The 1978 film Ironweed is based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name by William Kennedy (who also wrote the screenplay). I first watched Ironweed many years ago on HBO and, although it is not an uplifting or happy movie, I have always loved this film. Both Nicholson and Streep well deserved their best actor Oscar nominations for their brilliant portrayals of very complex characters - two people who once had a life, but due to tragic circumstances, fell about as far as a human being can fall by1939, the final year of the Great Depression. Mentally ill, alcoholic, virtually homeless, starving, haunted by their pasts - no one watching this film will expect a Hollywood ending. I am a playwright and most of my full-length dramas deal with the 1930's and the Great Depression. Given that, it was only natural that I would be drawn to Kennedy's masterful book and this very powerful and poignant film. (I am also a fan of Tom Waits who plays a marvelous supporting role in the film). If this extremely challenging period in America's history interests you, and you admire brilliant screenwriting and superb acting, definitely check out Ironweed. Read full review
