James anno 1997
This album from James is my third; I have listened to Laid from 1993 and Pleased to meet you from 2001 earlier. Whiplash was released in between, in 1997, and it's an album that doesn't differ that much from the other two. Still the songs are new ideas and not repetitions from earlier. So I think James delivers the goodies as they use to: it's pop music, but still a little odd and diffrent from main stream, with good vocals and arrangements. Even though Brian Eno has been responsible for some co-production, this record is produced by Stephen Hague, and I think he's done a very good job. What's the bands main expression on this record?: Difficult to say. It's maybe ordinary urban life, human desires and disappointments. Only 5 out og 11 cuts as it's lyrics reproduced on the cover sleeve. The album cover has got some kind of peep-show esthetics, a transvestite doll shown in different perspectives, whatever the idea behind that. In this connection I get the association towards urban loneliness an ailienation, something threatening and still mysterious.
Well written songs with tasteful arrangemnts and something spicy and different is the trademark of James, and they delivered what I expected. A definately good record, easy to recommend to all of you who like this band from other records they have produced.Read full review...
