MegaRAID 9261-8i is an excellent quality and inexpensive RAID solution

Great quality MegaRAID card works right out of the box. It comes with RAID 5 & 6 without a license however, if you want other MegaRAID management features such as CacheCade Pro 2.0, Recovery and SafeStore will need a separate license and have to purchase a license on chip or software key. Using an HP z420 workstation, this card snapped right into an open PCI-e 8x slot and was working immediately. I needed this card to rescue an ailing RAID5 6TB array and did a fantastic job building a new 12TB RAID5 array to store the backup operations. Fast, quick to install and configure. Installed the MegaRAID management suite to manage the array while in Windows 10 (or may also be installed in Windows server.)Read full review...

It's OK for HDD not great for SSD

Pros:
Works fine as a single card
Works well with SATA/SAS HDD drives
Good FW and driver support

Cons:
Was only able to push ~72K Seq and Rand Read and ~60K 70/30 R/W Seq/Rand IOPS with 8 SSD drives @RAID-0 with 16K SZ, Cache: WriteBack enabled/Read disabled/Drive enabled
FastPath useless with anything smaller than 128K stripe size
FastPath performs bad with random writes at higher than 4K block size (not suitable for many workloads)
No really suitable for SSD drives (don't take full potential of SSD speed... something like Adaptec ASR 71605 would be a better option)
Didn't work with other 2nd 9260-8i controller installed in my system (HP Z620)
Not supported with ESX 7.x but OK with anything 6.x

A whole lotta bandwidth in one small card

I had no problems setting up a RAID 10 configuration with 14 drives in a Dell PowerVault MD1000 and one hot spare. I even had a drive failure in the first few minutes of operation (I was alerted by the piercing alarm), and a rebuild started automatically on the hot spare.

The device and the virtual drive were all recognized in Windows 7 without the need to install any additional drivers.

Just what I needed

All the other controllers which claimed to support larger that 2 TB did not work. This worked flawlessly.
