Vivid

Hunter's description of the stately home that's the scene of much of the action is so vivid I feel I've been there. And three are unexpected twists to the plot.

worth a pound or two......

Hunters' prose is very much of its' time. It is gentle (pardon the pun) and strolling in its form and I think you have to be a fan of this type of novel (as I am) to really enjoy it. It bears little resemblance to the TV spin off other than perhaps the rural settings and Gentlys' relaxed atitude to all things.
They are not long reads and not particularly convoluted, cant remember seeing a rude word or thought in any of the Gently novels that I have read but I thorougly enjoy them for their simplicity, the lead character, the settings and the period feeling from a time when England was a nicer place to be.
Buy one and try one - I think you will enjoy.........
