Fascinating

While the quality of the (black-and-white) film is often poor, this old series (which I bypassed in my youth for some reason) is fascinating to watch now through the filter of time and maturity. Considering how much emphasis this series placed on shoot-outs, it remains at its core a story of complicated, interesting relationships that holds up beautifully. The players of small parts are among the most memorable of the period and include a large number of actors who later became famous, or at least well-known for later iconic roles, such as James Anderson, who played villain Bob Ewell with such odious intensity in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” It’s fun to spot these talented performers. Something you may come to appreciate in this series is the beautiful use of shadows — a trick of art that we lost when color came to dominate. Read full review

Excellent DVD

The video quality is quite good, but will be better in blu-ra, which is why I've given it a four out of five stars. As a western buff Laramie is my favorite, and no one draws his gun quick'ern Jess Harper.Read full review

Nice introduction to some great characters

Although in black and white, this first season of a wonderful Western series is terrific. The introduction of the main characters is very well done, giving just enough background to get you interested in them. The two stars, John Smith as Slim Sherman and Robert Fuller as Jess Harper, slowly develop their relationship with each other and seem to genuinely enjoy each other's company. (Aside: they were best friends in real life, which may account for how completely comfortable they are in the series.) Hoagy Carmichael plays an interesting character, although he was replaced by several others during the run of the series, as was the young actor (whose name I can't remember at this moment) who plays Slim's brother. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys good, old fashioned cowboy shoot-em-ups and characters you can relate to. It's also interesting to see several veteran actors showing up in different parts throughout the series. There is some violence, but nothing that would be frightening for children, especially since there is usually a lesson or two included.Read full review

You NEED this set.

The best western ever, period, that's all! Jess and Slim are the best and that's all there is to that! I bought it in case the tv station ever takes it off the air I can still get my fix.

The picture quality isn't good. But, it's good to see it again.

Picture quality isn't good, but glad too see it again. The group that puts this out, tells you at the start of each dvd, picture, and sound quality not as good as they like, but with today's technology this is as good as it gets.Read full review
