A detailed look at one WWII bomb group

This is a month by month history of one of the B-24 bomber groups stationed in England during the second half of WWII. The photographs are numerous and extremely informative. The text, which details each mission and the first hand accounts of the participants where possible, can be on the dry side. There are so many missions, so many stories, so many tragedies. There is a listing of the airplanes used, the missions flown, and a horrifying list of the dead, wounded, and captured. There are also color profiles of some of the airplanes. It’s hard to absorb that these aircrews, subjected to the stress of almost daily flights into harm’s way, seeing their mates shot down (or themselves), confronted with death constantly, were mostly 20 year olds.

This is a big, heavy book that goes into exhaustive detail about the 458th Bomb Group. I knew one of the surviving airmen and that’s why I wanted a copy. If the bombing campaigns of WWII interest you, this is well worth having.

Thank you!

book was packaged well and very carefully, with additional wrapping to protect the dust jacket which was very appreciated. i got it as a gift for my dad, whose father was in this bombing group, and there are a few mentions of the plane he mainly flew, paddlefoot! can’t wait to see the look on his face when i give it to him :) thank you again!Read full review
