Listen My Friends!: The Best Of [Remaster]* - Moby Grap

I was not really familiar with Moby Grape's material other than the song 8:05. But I fell in love with the San Francisco sound years ago and like everyone who will be buying this CD, waited years for such a compilation to be released. Having said that, it will take me several listens or more to really decide whether Moby Grape is one of my favorite bands. I was disappointed that this compilation did not contain all the tracks from their debut album. If that had been released instead, I probably would've just purchased that. The stories and reviews we've all read before about the Grape's first album make it legendary. Although I was 13 way back in 1968, my local radio stations did not give any airplay to any Moby Grape songs. Furthermore, "FM" radio wasn't really there yet. And unfortunately, today's classic rock formats ignore Moby Grape completely. So many of the great album cuts from the 60's are disappearing from radio. I believe every true music collector must add this CD to their music library.Read full review...

Listen My Friends! Moby Grape Lives!

The late sixties Psychedelic group Moby Grape is one of the most underrated and unfairly dismissed bands of all time. An all-star cast assembled from prior San Franciscan bands, Moby Grape had the advantages of multiple songwriters and singers, accomplished musicians at every instrument, and a well-versed appreciation of American music influences: blues, country, fold, rock, and mild-psychedelia.
Admittedly, the name Moby Grape itself did them no favors. It was the punch line of a novelty joke such as, "what's large, purple, lives in the ocean, and battles Captain Ahab? Answer: Moby Grape" (ha, ha).
What really killed this group's chances for fame and fortune was the inane actions of their record label (a common denominator in other worthy bands' untimely demise). Columbia'a bright idea in this instance was to simultaneously release all 10 songs on their debut album on 5 singles.
Critics and consumers alike were terminally turned off by this pretentious power play. The sad truth is that all 10 songs were great and their first self-titled album is an obscure classic that still holds up to repeated listenings today.
Listen My Friends has a healthy selection of songs off the first album plus a representative sampling of worthy contenders from the remainder of their barely noticed recording career. Find the first album and buy this and your essential Grape collection will be complete.
Afterall, in the heyday of The Summer of Love in San Francisco, this group was a headliner at The Fillmore and Avalon Ballrooms, equals to Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Santana. If you like any of these original psychedelic wonders (and who in their right mind doesn't), then check out The Grape! Ignore the hype and enjoy the ride. It will be well worth the trip. Long Live The Grape!
